Why do they have different wingtips if they´re the same type?
The first is a J-11A while the second photo shows J-11B. They are different planes from different regiments.

J-11B vs J10B (my guess based on context) in golden helmet contest
- The J-11B pair eventually won
- The golden helmet is a "single elimination tournament" type of contest
- Different types of jets can fight each other
- J11-B has disadvantage in BVR. But in this situation they won because J-10B pair got too close.
- J11-B has advantage in close-range
I have trouble believing that the J-11B has an advantage at close range, unless two pilots of differing skill levels were involved.

I had previously also made that false assumption. It turns out J-11B is in much need of MLU and avionics upgrade as its radar is much inferior to the systems on J-10B/C.With a bigger radome, the J-11B would have advantage in BVR with its bigger and therefore more powerful radar than the J-10B.
Otoh, the information, if accurate, point to the J-10B being able to gain the advantage in BVR over the J-11B, possibly in spite of its bigger and more powerful radar, by being stealthier with the use of DSI and by the fact of it being smaller size.

Actually J10B has a better radar (PESA) vs. J11B's PD. The same pilot lost to J10 (A or B) in the past, this is the first time he won. So I actually read the story with a bit of despair for Chinese Flankers. They finally figured out how to use J11B this year! On the other hand, J10 being a domestic product, has quicker/shorter iterations, is more mature in avionics, despite being much smaller. If they continue the same rates of improvements I can't see J11's future after a really short time. Maybe 2017 is the peak of Chinese flankers.
