From what we can see of the prototypes, the J-16D flew with wingtip ECM/EW pods, but seeing as they seem to be standard to the aircraft, I wouldn't be surprised if they served a similar role to the wingtip pods that are always equipped on the EA-18G -- i.e.: the role of ESM.
J-16D does also have some other antennae and internal avionics integral to the aircraft.
But the bulk of J-16D's active EW capability, IMO should be in the form of large EW/jamming pods -- which of course we have yet to see.
We haven't had much updates of the J-16D so we don't really know how it's proceeding or if the PLA is committed to developing and inducting it yet. I do hope they commit though, the J-16 is an excellent platform to develop a modern EW escort jammer and SEAD/DEAD aircraft for, and such work can be spiralled to an EW J-15 variant as well, which supposedly a prototype made its maiden flight either this year or last year.

I think the question is simply, what si ordinary or the usual standard fit: For a regular J-16 is is standard to have PL-10-pylons and as such an internal ECM-system, whereas for a J-16D it is standard to have these larger EW-pods fitted on the wing-tips.
By the way, any news on the J-16D program?

A few rumors from "百战刀". Does anyone know how credible he is? Huitong seems to be reading his posts a lot.
1. PLAAF will launch regular "island patrols" with a combination of H-6N and either J-16 or J-11D.
2. Three prototype Flankers have been spotted at Yanliang test center last month, and a new J-11D prototype is suspected to be among them.
I want images !!!!! ... the same for the UCAV.
