Maybe the whole hi/lo concept is being scrapped and replaced by division of labor, kind of like how the USN doesn't have a hi/lo combo in capital non-carrier warships or a similar combo in MBTs.

Anyone else thinks that the J-16 will fulfill the fighter-interceptor-bomber role in PLAAF? So far it is the only fighter confirmed to carry long-range AA missiles.

Also, it appears that China will go for a high-lo combination of J-20/J-16 instead of J-20/FC-31 in the near future. What do you guys think of the combination?

Hi,

The long-range interceptor role will be fulfilled by the J-11D. As for the hi-lo combination, the J-10D and a future "super-Flanker" will likely fulfill the "lo" part of that equation.

J-16 will definitely fulfill the long range heavy weight 4+ multirole fighter role for the Air Force.

And no, J-16 is not the only fighter confirmed to carry long range AA missiles (I assume you mean PL-XX). J-11B was also seen carrying them at Dingxin last year as part of the red sword exercises.

And it is far too early to see what kind of "hi-lo" combination the Air Force will go for in future. The fact of the matter is that the Chinese Air Force is big enough such that they will need a big 4+ generation fleet in the future even if they wanted a large number of 5th generation fighters (whether it's all J-20s or J-20/FC-31 or whatever), considering the USAF is even looking to continue maintaining hundreds of F-15s and F-16s into the future decades despite still having F-35s to supplement their F-22s.
