They have added upgrades to the radar so that thy now can use certain Chinese weapons like the PL-12 AAM, the KG600 ECM....

Anyone else thinks that the J-16 will fulfill the fighter-interceptor-bomber role in PLAAF? So far it is the only fighter confirmed to carry long-range AA missiles.

Also, it appears that China will go for a high-lo combination of J-20/J-16 instead of J-20/FC-31 in the near future. What do you guys think of the combination?

J-20/J-16 hi-lo? Thinks its more like J-20/J-10C for the moment and in the future J-20/J-XX(2) in terms of hi-lo. J-16/J-16D on the other hand covers several specialized roles as you pointed out (All the roles performed by the Su-30MKK, JH-7A and even the MiG-31)

I think J-16 have more payload than J-20 so in many ways its not inferior, its more like J-20 clear out the threats then come J-16 the bomb truck to wipe out the rest.

Why would J-16 AESA be superior to J-20? The only reason I can think of is maybe because J-20 needs LPI while J-16 can blast radar all-out?
