Just a novice question .. how do you know those are J-11? ..... look like J-11A to me?
Quite sure tiny difference as by example different Su-27SM for we humble watcher interesting to have such profiles for identified the different J-11s

I am not sure those are AL31, though. Petals seem a bit short for that. And there was another subvariant of WS10 a few years back, started appearing on J11, which had the whole rear nozzle part elongated a bit, making it a bit harder to tell apart from AL31 in certain conditions.

Also, the wingtip rails seem to look more like the original su27/j11a or j11d rails, rather than ones on J11b.

So it may seem this is either some newly built j11 (cross betwen B and D?) or perhaps an upgraded J11A, with a new radar and perhaps even ws10 engines?

Those engines are WS-10s.

On closer inspection... I still can't definitively tell.

The biggest tell is always that the Al-31 has an outer layer of petals overlapping an inner layer of petals, while the WS-10 only has one outer layer of petals. In the new picture the engine is only partially contracted, but you can tell there is no inner layer of petals if you look closely. There are small gaps between the petals, which is what those black lines are. That the nozzle isn't fully contracted is also why the petals don't look as short.

Looks like AL31s to me...WS10A petals are shorter than AL31, and the petal on this Flanker looks too long to be WS10A to my eyes...
