Hoho .... a J-16 armed with a PL-10, KD-88 and IMO it looks like a targeting pod.

The targeting pod geometry looks a lot like the STS-56 offered by Beijing A-star from a while back, but without the rotating MAWS feature.... or similar to Sniper pod as well.

>> but without the rotating MAWS feature.... <<

Is that because J-16 has 2 * 120 degree MAWS on the rear ?

J-11B --- 2 * 120 degree MAWS ??

Yes... but the rotating MAWS feature is also somewhat different becomes it offers 360 degree coverage horizontally, and also has better coverage facing the ground, where SAMs are most likely to come from.

Still, the pod J-16 has may not be related to the Beijing A-Star product.

According to huitong, it seems as if even the PLAN is interested in the J-16 instead of the JH-7B,

"There was a rumor that PLAN is also interested in J-16 in favor of JH-7B but this has not been confirmed. "

Thoughts?

Is there any news about a MLU for the older J-11 models or even the J-10 ? This will be a game changer as hundreds of old planes will be equipped with new combat systems like all glass cockpit, new MAW, ECM and even an AESA radar.

It's been suggested that J-11Bs may end up getting an AESA upgrade.
I myself have thought that it may be worth upgrading J-10As as well, like so, and giving the aircraft new avionics like you suggested as well.

But if such an upgrade or MLU programme is being considered, we've seen no physical signs of it yet.

I wouldn't be surprised. JH-7 was a great platform for its time, but it makes sense to have a more capable aircraft for strike roles today. Not to mention if the Navy took on J-16 as well, they can leverage a hot production line and cheaper production costs, without having to take on a separate project in JH-7B. We've also heard very little news regarding JH-7B overall, so it is very possible that the Navy could ditch JH-7B entirely.

Personally I think that makes a lot of sense.

Agreed, so does this mean the end of JH-7 production?
