I'm still not getting it. If they can make "by hand" single number of units for prototypes, why can't they make "by hand" 100 copies?

Look at Ferrari or Lamborghini. These cars are not mass produced, they are "hand made".

100 engines per year is 8.3 engines per month. That is not mass production!

If they make the quantities more than 500,000, like Honda Accords or Toyota Camrys, the quality of Ferrari or Lamborghini cannot even close to what you see in today's markets. That is why Hondas and Toyotas, according to the US Consumer Report, are among the best made cars in the world.

Because the engineers who made the prototypes by hand are busy making the prototypes for its successor.

Exactly. Even if its just 100 engines, and is assembled by hand by workers, it is still called mass production because it is not being built by the original engineers. It is not a custom job. Mass production does not mean assembly line or automatic robotics. It means a process is set up that is repeated as efficiently as possible by workers. Its based on a set of instructions from the original designers. They don't have the same insight and problem-solving skills that original researchers did.

Also many of the parts come from third party suppliers. And when those suppliers get an order for 100 parts, they use different staff and techniques, compared to the first part they made in direct collaboration with CAC, which can result in more quality control issues.

Well, I couldn't tell exactly, but it looks to be new photos of J-11BS. I'd have to go through my collection to see if this is J-11B or BS. But seems like it's the latter.

If you think about it, J-10B and J-11BS pictures came out at around the same time, but I'm getting so many new photos of J-10B that I don't even bother posting most of them. J-11BS on the other hand is rarely seen. This could be the first flying photos of it that I saw. The way SAC is going, I wouldn't be surprised if J-10BS (even though it doesn't exist yet, it probably will) joining service ahead of J-11BS
