Doesn't the problem with the J-11B has to do with the WS-10A  :(. The few J-11B flying with PLAAF have the AL-31F and not the WS-10A. This is the biggest dissapointment. We expected the J-11B to be the first aircraft to be powered by the WS-10A, and later-on J-10 variants would also be having a WS-10A variant.

So if there are serious issues with WS-10A that would effect both planes. Simply more AL-31 variant would have to be used.

Well, it's SAC so I'm not really surprised. I would be surprised if they actually managed to come up with something decent.
It's not really all their fault. WS-10A is a large part of it
Or they've just decided that given all the time that's passed, they might as well just work on the J-11C, in a case of Arjunitis (no offense to our Indian members).
no, they will continue, but have first sort out WS-10A though. I think they also had a big crash with J-11B that was not engine related and caused the program to set back a little bit.
Thanks to the reliability problems WS-10A engine, the J-11B had been in limbo the last few years. It seemed the major problems of the WS-10A was finally resolved and production is now in full swing. :coffee:

Certainly hope thats the case.......

But lets wait and see. Once CCTV starts showing multiple J-11B flying-off with WS-10A engines, then I guess some of us can breath a sigh of relief.

But, thats yet to happen....

I think they can partner up with rolls-royce and do license prodution on a model of engine that equal or better than WS-10A. Then the problem is solved.

Then this license produced one can take care all the variants of J-10, J-11.

Just ditch the WS-10A and keep working on the WS-15.

So what happens if the WS-15 hits production problems too? They just go to Rolls Royce and get a nice strapping deal for licensed production again? Besides, what's Rolls-Royce got that can produce as much thrust as the WS-10A anyways? How do you even go about getting a deal with Rolls Royce to make engines for you? How would a different engine even fit in an airframe designed for the WS-10A and AL-31FN?

Besides, it's not like problems in WS-10A is slowing down the development of the WS-15 (that we know of), and it's not like passing on WS-10A after spending so much time and money on its development will suddenly speed up the development of the WS-15. The projects are running in parallel and not series, and PLA spends more than enough money so that the two don't have to compete for resources.

Don't think ditching is an option. No matter how hard it is. Engine development is so critical. You can have all other advances but without suitable propulsion it won't fly (instead huge dependency on others for engines).

Regarding rolls-royce? Are they wiling to not only to develop an engine in the class of the WS-10A but also full tech transfer? I have my strong doubts.

So ditching IMHO is not even be a consideration

About the WS-15? WS-10A and WS-15 are based on different cores IIRC.

Wasn't there a show on CCTV not long ago which talks about engines development in China? Does anybody have the link?

Without engines, china will never have an independent aviation industry. Fighters, bombers, transport planes...all will have to rely on russian engines. It will bar china from being a world class military power.

it wont even be able to have an operational aircraft carrier. Without planes...why bother?

Hmm... it's interesting that despite this crash it doesn't look like the PLAAF is going for the twin engined J-10 that CAC has on paper.

This clue suggests that while some problems were suffered by J-11B when it first entered service at the end of 2007, PLAAF is confident enough that problems can be fixed... and the aircraft "reintroduced" with WS-10A engines around 2010. (Presumably around the same time as J-10B.)

Could it be that between 2007 and 2010, SAC will upgrade the J-11B into a J-11C? Could it sport an NRIET AESA radar? If the J-10B's radar is powerful, how powerful would the J-11C be considering there's more physical space for a big and powerful radar?? The volume should be even bigger than the F-22 or the F-35.
