You would not believe how many people out there still genuinely believe that the J-15 is a copy of the Su-33 and that the J-11B is a copy of the Su-27SK. Russian defense minister included.

To be fair, you can understand why some people would imagine them copies. Even though it is fully made in china with chinese components, and there are a few changes in material and avionics the change to J-11B is not as great as say, the Su-35.

There's a thread going on at key forums if you're interested.

If they're not copies of the Su-33 and Su-27, what are they? You have to admit The J-15 and J-11B's shaping look exactly like the Su-33 and Su-27, respectively. I understand the engine, radar, and avionics are different, anything else?

I think that is pretty much all that a plane has. You've got the airframe, engine, radar, avionics.

Slight derivatives? Like siege said, there's not a lot else that can be different, and the airframe isn't completely the same either (in terms of materials/composition).
So really if one wants to call the two aircraft copies, it is understandable, but the more PC term would be something along the lines of "indigenous variant". Kind of like the F-15J for Japan in relation to the US F-15C only it is 100% made in china and probably has a few bigger differences than the F-15J does.

They are license built aircraft, however they have some issues, the original contract called for 200 built with russian components, when China decided to cancel the delivery and import of Russian components, the original agreement was breached, the J-11B was one of the main issues, the Russian media reported that the J-11B and J-15 aircraft were illegal copies, however Russian high ranking officials claimed that Russia was on talks with China in order to fix and come to friendly terms on the issue.

So the legal agreement actual state is hard to know, much speculation has been written.

They are sukhoi Su-27 derivatives, are the same aircraft modified to chinese needs, with Chinese denomination but at the end of the day are simple Su-27s, called J-11 or J-15 in China but are still Flankers, even with some modifications on composites, you can not change all the original materials, composites are mostly used on skin surfaces and some aerodynamic structures but most of the J-11 still has the original composition of its parent aircraft.
