Finally the J-15 in NAVY-grey ! :p

I don't think this is a surprise.. PRC is very concern about credibility and prestige. Since Xinhua already declared PLAN is going to launch a CV soon(probably on July 1). We shall not be surprise actually the fighter jet serving onboard is probably ready and already tested on the simulated.

It will be a laughing stock if a PRC CV is launched and put into service without an operational fighter jet onboard.

I agree with You that it is not much "surprising" but a nice and wellcome find !

However I'm a bit sceptical, if a J-15 really will be launched already by that eraly date ... on the other side, this J-15 has a wellcome - esp. in contrast to the new J-10AH with the dumb white colour-scheme - nice low-viz. grey scheme, which si different to the one seen on the latest J-11BH/BSH. AS such there one additional aircraft with a similar grey scheme behind .... could that be another J-15 ?

When PRC decide to do something important big and significant plus announcing it to the world . It is always well-prepared. That is the style of PRC. You must remember that.

Deino,

I like you, but I cannot read that :)

Anyways, just floating this out there. How many people think that the J-15 will have AESA, seems to make sense to me. All new aircraft of this type should have AESA.

Has it ever been proved that the early su27s have gotten modifications? if so, what kind? I kept hearing how they got the likes of gps and even a modded FCS so they use r77, but those were just stories. Is there proof of that? Also, is there proof regular j11s were actually modernized so they use some new systems?

As for j10 and jh7, there should be little over 200 of j10 in service (with the agressor squadron and aerobatic team) and close to 200 jh7s in service. After all, people have identified 7 regiments of j10 and 8 regiments of jh7. J10 regiments are a bit larger, plus like i said, there is also the aggressor detachment and the acrobatic team)
In a Kanwa article where they interviewed with Sukhoi, they say that the imported su-27s (they said 70 of them) got upgraded to be able to fire R-77s. I think that also included early J-11s, since they really have no reason to upgrade the UBKs. We've also seen some J-11s (not J-11B) carrying PL-12. I think they have enough experience to convert all the necessary flankers to be able to fire ARH MRAAM if they want. Besides, they've imported a lot of newer variants of R-27 from Ukraine.

It makes sense that the PLA would choose J-15 as carrier plane, if at least for training - They already have experience operating J-11, and when starting out on something new you want to removed whatever is not directly related to the problem - hence a derivative of a proven platform. This does not mean that they mark J-15 as their standard for carrier fighter.

The same could be said of the J10. What more, since the J10 is a wholly Chinese plane, it will probably be easier to modify it for carrier operations because the team that first designed it are still around to offer their experience and insight.

However, the J11 has the advantage of range, load and being twin-engined. What more, since SAC is rumored to have obtained a Su33 prototype, they have a set blueprint for how to modify the airframe for carrier ops.

I think there might also be some politicking going on as well, with the carrier contract given to SAC to keep them alive as a competitor to CAC. CAC itself might have also reached its limit on how many projects it can have running at the same time, and their best personnel will be too pre-occupied with the J20, J10B, JF17 and UAV projects to have much time for a carrier J10 as well.

One more thing is that the Su-33 has proven to operate off soviet and russian carriers, and J-15 is a derivative of the Su-33.

China really needs a small scale conflict with some south Asian countries to further boost development in these type of planes. Without demand, it will take a long time for this to enter service and even longer for a new generation of naval fighters.
