waaaaaaa i just got lost in the designations.... maybe someone can shed some light on the matter ???
A good idea would be add some info about the plane along the designation (like "air-superiority" or "semi-stealthy multi-role").. here is what i found:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Chinese_aircraft
cnair.top81.cn/F-7_J-7_J-8.htm
cnair.top81.cn/J-10_J-11_FC-1.htm

I'm no expert but I'll try:

J-5=Mig 17
J-6=Mig 19
J-7=Mig 21

J-8=Twin engine fighter-Originally designed as an interceptor. Modified into a multi-role fighter in later versions.

J-9=Canceled single-engine fighter.

J-10=Single engine 4th-gen fighter-'Low' fighter, China's equivalent to the F-16C.

J-11=Originally canceled aircraft, designation reused for locally-made Su-27s-Air superiority fighter, China's F-15

J-12=Nanchang project, cancelled.

J-13=Shenyang project cancelled (though they could reuse the name)

J-14=??? (May not exist because of the bad luck associated with the number 4)

J-15=Carrier-based J-11B-China's Su-33 or F-18.

J-16=??? (Upgraded J-11BS/F-15E equivalent)-Strike Fighter, China's Su-30.

J-17=???

J-18=???

J-19=???

J-20=Twin engine stealth fighter, 5th generation. Multirole

Thanks ... I would add the following:

J-10 (original) = heavy interceptor project from SAC (some say with VG-wings)

J-11 = locally-made Su-27SK
J-11A = slightly improved J-11 with few modifications (cockpit ... ?) and higher content of Chinese parts
J-11B = completely Chinese Flanker with new radar, engines (WS-10A, ... albeit later and again with the AL-31F as an interim)
J-11BH = PLANAF-version of the "B"
J-11BS = trainer version of the "B" similar to the Su-27SK/UBK-relationship
J-11BSH = PLANAF-version of the "BS"

J-15 = carrier capable version of the J-11B + Su-33 (formerly known as J-11C or J-11BJ)
J-16 = fighter-bomber version of the "BS" similar to the Su-27UBK/Su-30MKK-relationship ... folowing latest rumors
J-17 - J-19 = several single- and twin-seat fighter and/or fighter bomber land and/or carrier-capable unpdates ... most likely including what is currently rumored as a "Silent Flanker".

Besides that, over there at the "What-if-modelers" Forum there's a special section for CG's and profiles ... and there is a guy who has a current serie of "older" aircrfat updated to 4. or 4.5 generation types !

A few days ago I simply suggested him to do the same with the Flanker ... I think he was not even aware that there are rumors about such a "Silent Flanker"; so let's enjoy: :D

Hello
Following a suggestion from Deino, here is my version of the Silent Flanker.
My main goal was to update the Flanker, but keeping the general shape of that aircraft: a modern version of the Flanker but one that could still be recognise as a member of the Flanker family.
Problably if there is a real world Silent Flanker (J-16?), it would not look like my version, but still...this is what if and I like my take on it; I hope you enjoy it too.

Deino :)

Um no, it's more like F-15D -- a two seater or training aicraft without any strike capabilities. Huitong's made it quite clear on his update.

Nope, if the plane has the ability to carry air-to-ground weapons, then it's can act as a strike plane.

Similar to the CF-18B and the J-10S

Here's what reports say:

- J-10A: multirole fighter
- J-10B: 4.5+ generation multirole fighter
- J-11A: upgraded Su-27SK
- J-11B: 4.5 generation fighter (comparable to Su-35BM or F-15C)
- J-11B/S/SH: trainer version of J-11B (comparable to F-15D)
- J-11H: naval version of J-11B
- J-15: carrier version of J-11B (comparable to Rafale)
- J-16: strike version of J-11B (comparable to F-15K)
- J-18: ? could be name for SAC 5th-generation fighter?
- J-17: possible designation for silent flanker
- J-19: possible designation for silent flanker
- J-20: 5th-generation strike fighter

- JH-7: original fighter-bomber
- JH-7A: upgraded fighter-bomber
- JH-7B: stealth re-designed fighter-bomber

- Q-5: based on J-6
- Q-6: based on L-15

We don't know whether SAC's indigenous 5th-generation program will be single engine or double engine

Thats' the thing, the J-11BS doesn't have the capability to carry A2G weapons, from huitong's rather confusing update. That in turn means J-11B doesn't have teh capability to carry a2G either.

Deino :)
Wouldn't that bomb bay between the engines wreak havoc on trans sonic drag?

When you think about it, naming the J-11 variants the way they are makes sense.
J-11/A=Su-27/F-15A/B
J-11B/S=F-15C/D
J-15/S=F-18C/D
J-16=F-15E

Even though the aircraft are similar, they are designed for different roles. By giving them different designations they can upgrade each one at a later date (create a J-15B, for instance).

The questions is, will there be any technological difference between the J-11B and J-15/J-15. For example, does the latest batch of J-11Bs have AESA?

Will the J-15 be equipped with AESA and some LO tech? What about the J-16

Nope, that's not true. You never turn a fighter into a trainer and then remove all weapons from it. Doing so will render the "trainer" part useless. All current fighter-trainers (like CF-18B, F/A-18F) all have ground attack capabilities, since it's a crucial part of training.

From what I know, the J-11BS has the ability to carry weapons (just like the J-10S and J-15S)

I don't know where you got the idea that the J-11BS can't carry any weapons (it's not from Huitong), but until you show some sources, it's not going to cut it.

I highly doubt that Huitong got his information regarding the J-11BS/J-16 from an article as well

J-11B and J-15 are all slated for AESA

I don't know about J-16 and the Silent Flanker, but since they are all based on the J-11B, it is highly likely that they will incorporate AESA
