It is quite mysterious. The J-11BS should be able to fill the fighter/bomber role. Perhaps the PLAAF wants something that is significantly more capable than the SU-30. Stick in some WS-10G engines, AESA radar, slap on some fan blockers, RAM, and a canopy coating...wala...J-16.

Haha, I don't know. Seems like Shenyang has too many aircraft on its plate.
J-15
J-16
J-17?
J-18?
J-19?

It's kind of pathetic when they're all flanker derivatives...

Updated info on the J-16

These days, designations are confusing for PLAAF fighters.

Huitong have recently announced that the J-11BS fighters are not the fighter-bomber variant of the J-11B. Instead, the fighter bomber is called the J-16 (which has recently been known).

The stealth version of the J-11B (which we used to call "J-16", aka "Silent Flanker") has apparently been renamed to either the J-17 or J-19.

Names can be confusing. I don't get why we can't simply call the fighter-bomber the J-11D and the stealth version the J-11E.

I posted same article about the further development of J-11 few months ago(,original article come from top81).
other version being consider was side by side variant.

Re: Updated info on the J-16

I think this belongs in the Flanker threat for the time being. That is where I posted the same info. Huitong is a very reliable source, but I wonder how he knows that the J-11BS will not be used as a fighter-bomber. If that is correct, then China will definitely need something to supersede the JH-7s.

J-5=Mig 17
J-6=Mig 19
J-7=Mig 21
J-8=Twin engine fighter
J-9=Canceled single-engine fighter
J-10=Single engine 4th-gen fighter.
J-11=Originally canceled aircraft, designation reused for locally-made Su-27s
J-12=Nanchang project, cancelled.
J-13=Shenyang project cancelled (though they could reuse the name)
J-14=??? (May not exist because of the bad luck associated with the number 4)
J-15=Carrier-based J-11B/F-18C equivalent
J-16=??? (Upgraded J-11BS/F-15E equivalent)??
J-17=???
J-18=???
J-19=???
J-20=Twin engine stealth fighter, 5th generation.

Not all of the designations have to be used. But there are at least 3 designations unaccounted for. I wouldn't doubt that the J-17 could be a 'super-flanker' to supplement the J-20. I don't think the J-20 will be built in large numbers. Huitong says the J-18 might have been the competing project to the J-20, but they could still re-use the designation like they did with the J-11. One of them could also be the successor to the J-15...a semi stealth naval fighter.

So stealth J-11B (Silent Flanker) is being developed alongside the J-16 fighter-bomber?

Re: Updated info on the J-16

So something like J11B = F15C, J11BS = F15D & J16 = F15E ?
Why not call it J11C instead of J16 ? Maybe the enhancements to J16 over J11 is more than just addition of strike capabilities like F15E over F15C/D ?

Re: Updated info on the J-16

IMO these are nearly Sukhoi-like numberings/designations, where each new "Flanker" gets its own type.

seriously, do we really need to start a new thread for every flanker variant? Look, as I've said to you guys all along. Don't put too much hope on J-16 as a semi-stealth fighter. I'm sure SAC is trying to work on some kind of 5th generation program, but nothing is confirmed when it comes to designation. After all, how stealthy can you get from flankers?

Now, it's been mentioned by a lot of people on Chinese bbs that J-16 is going to be a fighter bomber program and that's what I'm going by. All that says is that J-11BS program is more like su-27ubk rather than like su-34. That explains why it was developed so fast, but it's certainly not capable of taking over the role of JH-7A yet.

J-11C was supposed to be the real name for the J-15, while J-15 is given to a new SAC stealth fighter. But again, this adds to the confusion

Okay, here are the current SAC projects:
- J-15
- J-16 (J-11B upgraded variant)
- J-17/J-19 (the "Silent Flanker" stealth variant)
- 5th-generation stealth fighter ("Snowy Owl")

The stealth Flanker is still under development at SAC along with the J-16.

Stealth Flankers are possible, as proven by the T-50

J-16 is not an upgraded J-11B, it is an upgraded J-11BS. How much upgraded is the question. It is designed for a different role than the J-11B
