California has been maj-min since the 1990s and in the last 30 years, California has managed to achieve growth faster than the US average and continually push the technological frontier to new heights. LA functions very well? I live here and am in the process of moving because it is ANARCHY. Don't know what delusional bubble you live in but without trying to show off let me just tell you, the very wealthiest neighborhoods here are not safe and I've seen multiple houses burglarized on one of the wealthiest streets on the planet. When the police came and details were given they never followed up. So yea, much ado about nothing right?

Impoverished villages in rural China are safer than this shithole, and I'm not exaggerating. Any benefits these major cities have gotten that makes them so wealthy are grandfathered in from the accumulation of wealth and infrastructure that was built decades ago. It's all decline from here on out.

I have lived in some of those other cities you listed and many family and friends have too, and let me tell you it's not nearly as rosy as you're making it out to be.

Los Angeles County's GDPPC goes into 70K, it's higher still in Orange County and other parts of the Los Angeles MSA. Are there problems in cities? Yes. Are they large enough to be destabilizing? No. The problems are small enough that you can have massive prosperity and technological development. The Tenderloin isn't preventing all the semiconductor companies from innovating in the SF-SJ CSA

It's GDP per capita is $72k and it's cost of living is ridiculously high. And that doesn't even factor in that these GDP per capita metrics are mean not median, which is the whole point. Lots of rich White and Asian folks and very poor Latin American and African folks.

Yeah, I made a typo. But even in the *poorest* part of the Los Angeles metro (Orange County says hi), GDPPC is $72K. Even the GDPPC in Pudong doesn't get up to $72K. Los Angeles has a large population so even with a large Gini coefficient, that it can reach $72K implies massive technological development and innovation and economic power. Poorer minorities suggest significant growth opportunities and the main contention of the thread: "the US being ethnically diverse is destabilizing for US power" is bullshit. California is minority-majority and has Silicon Valley, large corporate headquarters, insanely productive research universities (UCB, USC, UCLA, CalTech, Stanford) and a GDPPC nearing $80K. California was one of the first states to become minority-majority and is one of the most prosperous and technologically advanced states in the United States. Your racist notion that somehow ethnic diversity is the death knell of American power is flat up wrong.

How are you defining "part of the Los Angeles metro"? Last I checked their were only 2 counties that covered it, LA & Orange county. What are you trying to glean from the county level? I made the point that within those counties when you break it down by neighborhood, the real differences, which are humongous, become clear.

Yeah, the LA MSA is LA County and Orange County with Orange County having a higher GDPPC. If you use the Los Angeles Combined Statistical Area (adding in San Bernandino, Ventura, Kern and Imperial), you'll get multiple counties with higher GDPPCs than Los Angeles County. The contention: "the US can't complete b/c of social destabilization if it is ethnically diverse" is complete bullshit given that California exists. Yes, California is unequal but that just points to easy growth opportunities and even the poorest in California (by income) are wealthier than most people in China.
