The US has ZERO interest in nuking anybody. As for "what they're doing to Russia", Putin attacked another country. Should we have sent him flowers?
Trump declaring he wants the US to have more nukes while demanding China eliminate theirs doesn't help either. And as quoted by one General who Trump asked... "Why can't we use them if we have them?" China's silo build-up came after that. And the US started an illegal war based on the "false pretext" of WMD's in Iraq where the US thought the Iraqis where going to throw hugs and kisses and rose petals at them for invading them.

Which boggles the mind when you think about it. Makes you wonder how they missed it. More than a few heads should have rolled over this.

Saying heads should roll is too harsh. It could have simply boiled down to budget and/or manpower. What I am surprised about is that no one seems to be applying AI to this sort of work. Visual recognition of circular objects against plain backdrop should facilitate the process considerably.

The US nuclear force is decrepit. Mechanical systems don't last forever and our systems are decades past there sell-by date. He wanted to replace existing systems, not increase the overall size necessarily.

No Trump said he wanted more to where someone told him that was bad to say publicly (i.e., China increasing to a thousand nukes as a result) to which then later he demanded to counter any flak he was getting from saying it that China has no treaty obligation on elimination of nukes to which why the US should have more nukes. Never mind the US had multiple times more nukes than China and wanted more.

I believe I've posted about SAM candidate sites identified by AI before. They will always produce a huge list. You still need a human analyst to clear the misidentifications and you really don't want to miss one. And not all silos are built in the desert... Only these ones are.

I don't mean literally "heads roll" (mostly ;) ) but I agree, it would be a perfect job for AI but you would have to mitigate the risk for foreign interference. (Somebody hacking in and telling your system, "don't look here" or swapping out data.

Doesn't even have to be interference. It's simply a search problem that is common in image recognition.

There will always be false negatives with a tight parameter filter. So you miss a ton but the sites you do pick up are likely to be actual sites. But if you loose your parameters too much you have way too many false positives. Those require a human analyst to sort.

So either you miss or the AI only marginally reduces workload.

Do you have a source on that? Even now, no specific numbers have ever been decided upon.

There's this country called, "Russia". And again, it's not the US who just got caught building 400 missile silos. Just sayin'.
