China has held a series of activities to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of Zhu Guangya (1924-2011), a leading scientist in the country's research and development of nuclear weaponry.

The institutions that have organized commemorative activities include the General Armament Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and the China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP).

The PLA General Armament Department and its subordinate bodies have organized workshops and other kinds of gatherings in memory of the top engineer of the country's defense industry. Chang Wanquan, the head of the department, as well as a member of the Central Military Commission, paid a visit to Zhu's family members.

The CAE has also held a workshop in memory of its founder and former president. Zhou Ji, the current president of the CAE, pledged to follow the example of Zhu and urged all Chinese scientists to contribute to the "great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation."

On Sunday, the CAEP held a special gathering entitled "Zhu Guangya and China's Nuclear Weapon Science and Technology Sector with Chinese Characteristics." Zhu was a former CAEP president.

According to official records, Zhu was born in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in 1924. In the 1950s, Zhu returned home after studying nuclear physics in the United States. He worked in the nuclear sector until his death on Feb. 26, 2011.

Zhu joined the ruling Communist Party of China in 1956. He was an academician with both the CAE and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a vice chairman of the 8th and 9th National Committees of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

Definitely Russian style or the rumored big TEL for ICBM, but...there has been saying that PLA eyed their TEL with railroad transport requirement, and something like that people said won't fit...

There was never any photographic indication 2nd arty went anywhere with railroad TEL.

But yeah it looks like they're continuing with the next gen ICBM program which is good news. the current DF-31/A TEL isn't fully off road capable and a new missile can take advantage of new evasive/countermeasures for warheads and add more MiRVs from a larger missile etc.

Very interesting. The original DF-31/31A TEL gives some road mobile cabability, but this would give actual off-road capability. It is a must have for PRC considering its small nuclear arsenal.

heh. Its the first time that i hear about DF-16.

And why would china want a 4000 km IRBM ??? DF-21 and DF-31A suit china´s needs well.

This is a new TEL. Never seen that one before. But the cannister appears to be too small to fit DF-31A or any ICBM for that matter.

Perhabs it is just DF-21 with a new TEL. The 5-wheeled TEL used now by DF-21 doesnt appear much stable, with the cannister inclined. A six-wheeled TEL (that its what this TEL look likes) gives more stability.

The Chinese army is researching a new type of conventional missile that is set to be weaponized and entered into active service within five years, military sources have revealed.

China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC), the nation's largest missile weaponry manufacturer, is set "to complete research, production and delivery of this new generation of missile by 2015," the China NewsService reported Thursday.

The new missile would be part of a network forming a solid defense system allowing for total coverage in both defense and attack, and capable of dealing with various threats from land, sea, air, space as well as cybernetic attacks, according to the report.

The report, however, did not provide any further details of the new missile.

A military source close to the development, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed to the Global Times yesterday that "The subject under development is a medium- and long-range conventional missile with a traveling distance of as far as 4,000 kilometers."

"The research is going smoothly, and the missile will be produced and ready for service in five years," he said, noting that the project would also entail a three-year evaluation period.

"It extends the range of China's missiles and will therefore greatly enhance the national defense capabilities," the source said.

The source also unveiled that "the Chinese-made Dong Feng 21D missile, with firing range between 1800 and 2800 kilometers, is already deployed in the army."

Foreign media have also speculated that the Dong Feng 21D is a "carrier killer" and would prove to be a game-changer in the Asian security environment, where US Navy aircraft carrier battle groups have ruled the waves since the end of World War II, the AP reported.

China debuted its first stealth fighter jet, the J-20, in January, in a test flight that coincided with a visit to Beijing by US Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

Following the successful test flight, speculations and assessments of Beijing's military advancement echoed around the world.
