Colin Powell was the highest ranking US official I believe. I think he did it during a congressional hearing.

Tom Clancy himself has a story after he wrote The Hunt for Red October, someone from congress approached him and asked him where he got the intelligence that the Russians had a caterpillar drive.

What?! What is the congressional hearing about? I can't imagine the likes of Colin Powell use a poorly researched, poorly written, racist fiction book to make a point. And if the Senate committee believed him, and he really did such thing, I am losing hope in our political and military leadership a bit by bit.

Sorry, I have no idea what the hearing was about. I just saw a clip of him referring to the book. If you remember, after the book was released, all they talked about in Washington regarding China was the imminent invasion of Russia by China for it resources.

Does China need more Nuclear Weapons ?

China despite being the Second Largest Economy and Second Largest Land Mass of the 5 UN Security Council members has by far the least amount of Nuclear Weapons.

Estimates put China's Nuclear Weapons Arsenal at around 200. Compared to Russia's 10,000 and the U.S's 8,000. Are 200 Nukes more than enough, and Russia and the U.S are just simply wasting their money on a huge unneeded surplus of nukes, or does China require some more ?

200 is a reasonable number of nukes for the US and Russia and too many for UK, France and Israel.

Any less would not make anyone think they are a serious threat.
any more would add fuel to the building china up as a bogie man.

the way of this world goes is that america feels absolutely threatened if they can not absolutely dominate anyoneelse. anyoneelse must give up the pursuit of their own security and interest enable to be free!

to be really honest even 2000 nukes is enough. let alone 10 000. the Earth will be demolished way before the war has even started.

200 is in operational status, ready to fire within seconds even this number is highly doubtful. The real Chinese nuke arsenal is .. nobody knows apart from perhaps 50-100 Chinese elites. It would be utterly stupid for China to only have 200 nukes and I know for sure they are NOT stupid. My guess is 800-1,000 nukes. I don't see any difficulty for China to make even 3,000 nukes, even in 1980s ... let alone now :)
