Generally speaking we don't know the designation of either next gen aircraft, be it CAC or SAC. Only difference is that the CAC one had a visible serial PLA watchers could base their naming speculation off on. However it could quite literally be anything really. It just about waiting and drinking tea for new info in general at this point.

I personally think it would make sense though?

J-10 -> 2010s
J-20 -> 2020s
J-36(J-30?) -> 2030s.

But all in all naming schemes are at the end of the day completely arbitrary. The Americans went from the F/A-18 to the F-22, after which came the F-35. Not even mentioning the freak that was F-117 which should have been A-11 or whatever, as it was an attack aircraft. Or how after the J-20 followed the J-35, which was a result of the FC-...31. You get the idea.

There is a reason why it ended up like that.
F19 was skipped because Northrop was working on what would become the F20 and didn’t want someone confusing their single engine export fighter for the MiG 19 and wanted a round number.
F21 was the Kfir the Israeli fighter was used for a time by the USN/USMC as a surrogate for Russian fighters in Dissimilar Air Combat Training.
F24 was what was expected to be the designation for the JSF however they skipped to F35 using the X plane designation. It’s suspected that YF24 and YF25 were used for some black planes though
F117 got its designation from the black programs it was operating along side. Basically to hide the program in the budget but in plane sight they continued the Century series number system well evaluating a number of then secret aircraft.
YF110 was the MiG 21. The letter after the designation told you the source and variant the J7B was YF110C.
YF112 was Sukhoi SU22
YF113 was a mix of aircraft. The YF113B and E were MiG 23 variants the YF113D was the J5.
YF114 were MiG 17s
YF115 Klingon Bird of prey…. JK unknown probably a black aircraft program.
YF116 HAVE PHOENIX program which may have been other Russian aircraft as it’s under FME but after 1988 the CONSTANT PEG program squadron was closed and the Red Hats took over for the Red Eagles.

YF117 covers a number of SENIOR TREND & TACIT BLUE aircraft Not just the YF117A/F117A.
YF118G is Boeing Bird of Prey. With potential that the YF118 A-F being any number of other things that we probably never heard of.
They used these numbers for documenting flight hours and other administration functions. A pilot’s flight hours are sacred.

Thanks for the super interesting explanation.

The best part is when Justin Bronk speculates that J-36 has grown out of the JH-XX program because 14 years are too short to go from 5th to 6th gen fighter development. This just shows he doesn't even have a basic grasp of PLA procurement and development doctrines.

One of the most fundamental PLA equipment development doctrines is "服役一代、研制一代、预研一代、探索一代"
In English, at any given time for a given type of equipment:
1. One generation is in service
2. One generation is in full development.
3. One generation is in preliminary research and feasibility study
4. One generation is being brainstormed.
Chengdu was already researching the next-gen fighter program before we first saw J-20 in 2011. Just like they were already researching J-20 when J-10 first flew in 1998.
When you've spent your whole career studying European aircraft development his perspective makes sense. Can you imagine what PLAAF procurement looks like next to stuff like the Typhoon or Tornado program?

Rick Joe wrote a bit about how the J-20S has served as a test-bed for the J-36 fighter. With that in mind, I really believe that the J-36 is a two seat fighter.

Other things China used the J-20s to help design the J-36

-acting as a drone command ship
-serve as suite for EW
-power generation of WS-15 for a command ship and this lead to the decision to have 3 engines
