The “deal” that is being released to the public for consumption states that the lease (and maintenance) of the 12 SU-24MK all-weather, supersonic, laser-guided attack aircraft will be in exchange for Argentine beef and wheat in order to circumvent the EU sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine debacle
The deal, in the works since Russian President Vladimir Putin's July
to Buenos Aires, is not the first such exchange between the nations. Argentina, which has long sought to upgrade its air force,
five Russian Mi-17 assault helicopters in 2010. This latest trade is not exactly going to revolutionize Argentina's military, either The Sukhoi Su-24 "Fencers" are
craft. The aircraft dose have value as a strike aircraft and would make an excellent replacement for the Super Etendards. Yet the deal is noteworthy in part because you don't often see major powers bartering staples for weapons systems, and also because some observers expect the new fleet to be used to patrol around the Falkland/Malvinas Islands.
