United States donates speedboats to the Navy of Colombia
(Defensa.com) The National Navy of Colombia has received from the United States six quick to perform missions of interception of vessels involved in illegal trafficking boats. The boats have been donated by the United States through the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) to strengthen the capacity of Colombia to combat drug trafficking in the Caribbean.
The ceremony was attended by Defense Minister Juan Carlos Pinzon Bueno, the US ambassador in Colombia Kevin Whitaker and Commander of the National Army of Colombia among other guests. The defense minister said that "these ships will allow fight against crime and drug trafficking in Colombia. This is our main goal with our ally the United States. " He also assessed that "America is our partner and has provided resources and ongoing support in this fight, which is why today we received these vessels will increase our ability to intercept tons of cocaine traffickers."
Ships are the type Apostle Tops and T-410 is the first installment of a grant ten boats, the other four being designed to perform similar operations but in the Pacific. Thus capacity will increase to perform maritime interdiction missions against suspected of being used for illegal trafficking of drugs or weapons and boats.
