Indonesia is set to become one of the nine partner countries of the BRICS organization starting January 1, 2025. This announcement was made by Vladimir Putin’s Advisor on International Relations, Yury Ushakov, on Monday, December 23.

In addition to Indonesia, eight other countries confirmed as BRICS partner nations on the same date are Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Cuba, Uganda, Malaysia, and Uzbekistan.

"Ahead of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, we received 35 membership applications. Undoubtedly, one of the most significant outcomes of the summit was the establishment of the 'BRICS partner countries' category," Ushakov stated during a press conference.

FOMO is strong, everyone preparing for the US collapse, to be "first ones" that joined the winning side. ;)

Fear of missing out

Indonesia’s pivot to BRICS reflects both its relationship with major powers, such as China and the US, and regional pressures.

As its de facto leader, Indonesia has historically championed initiatives like the South China Sea Code of Conduct and Myanmar’s peace process. Its G20 presidency further underscored its role as a mediator between global powers.

in ASEAN. For Prabowo’s administration, BRICS offers a platform to advance Indonesia’s interests in maritime security, economic growth, and global governance. It is a strategic move beyond an economic decision to amplify its voice on global issues and prevent fellow Southeast Asian countries from overtaking it in shaping the bloc’s agenda.

With a GDP of about US$1.4 trillion, a population surpassing 280 million and annual economic growth exceeding 5 per cent for much of the past decade, Indonesia is regarded as one of the most dynamic emerging markets globally, it added.

“Indonesia shares with other members of the group support for the reform of global governance institutions and contributes positively to the deepening of cooperation in the Global South, priority issues for the Brazilian presidency of Brics,” the ministry said.

Well this is interesting, good for Indonesia. Indonesia is a much better partner than Argentina and Saudi Arabia to the global south anyways.

Yeah, I remember just a few months ago when Indonesia didn't even want to join and was certainly not talked about as one of the few next members.

And here this comes. I think this new president turned out to be quite amazing. Indonesia will become more and more important as the center of ASEAN.

After India and Brazil, I think that Indonesia is the next strongest regional power in the world right now so quite a fitting addition.

As this is new Asian century, and as friends with China, Indonesia will reap even more benefits and power in this new world than even India.

this is great news. I would agree that Indonesia is more important than even Saudi Arabia.

Indonesia is a growing power and the 4th most populous nation in the world.

Saudi Arabia is on the way down and since that declining oil price can't sustain their spending spree.

And a full membership too. They deserve it. Frankly, Saudis should get kicked out if they keep sitting on the fences.

The BRICS wikipedia page and BRICS membership wikipedia page doesn't even mention Saudi Arabia and Argentina anymore. Are those two countries that disconnected from BRICS already? I thought the delay was more temporary. Saudi Arabia is still strategically good for BRICS due to their oil reserves and pricing power.

Well that came out of the blue! But agreed, Indonesia a far more useful member than Argentina at least. Saudi must be getting a sore arse sitting on the fence so long.

What BRICS+ now needs to do is to decide what it's actually for, and develop a concerted plan of action to achieve this.

Russians claimed that Saudi Arabia joined BRICS and Westoids claimed that it didn't.

But the reality is that Saudi Arabia received the invite, but never confirmed joining nor declined formally.

They are obviously hedging their bets. However, they are participating in all meetings as they were real full members, so this is probably to retain some face to the US.

Btw, just now I saw that even Turkey formally applied to fully join BRICS a few months ago but was rejected by India due to their relations with Pakistan. It didn't cross my radar.

they are just sitting on the fences. Waiting on this grand bargain with US where they get protection in exchange for not getting too close to China and establishing relationship with Israel.

So I think they've been waiting on Trump to come back to get a good deal. At some point, Saudis do have to chose I think. The longer they wait, the less useful they get. I don't think the leadership there really understands this.

They are what I would call a depreciating asset.
