If they really are planning a basket of currencies thing I don't think it'll work. It was tried with the euro and that failed to displace the dollar, despite the EU having a larger GDP than the US for some time. There's too much instability a currency controlled by multiple countries. Greece was bad enough episode for the EU, imagine India or South Africa for this currency.

It needs to be either the dollar or the yuan. As more countries trade more with China and America becomes more unstable I think the yuan is inevitable.
It's probably too early even for the BRICS countries themselves to decide on the exact thing. But no doubt that euro has set a bad example.

Basket of currencies are independent currencies that are the sole responsibilities of issuing countries. Euro is a single currency that is nobody's responsibility, I am being bit exaggerating but you can get the point. Euro is crippled at birth because countries share its reputation (exchange rate) but not sharing the same responsibility of domestic expenditure (budgeting and debt borrowing).

I think the de-dollar proposal as a basket of currencies are similar to the function of SDR (special drawing right). SDR is playing the role of dollar setting exchange rates of member currencies, but instead of trading with USD, members can (through SDR) trade with any member currency they choose or have. One can think of SDR as token gold/silver/diamond/USD.

SDR essentially enables any member currency to be used for trade instead of USD. The US certainly does not want that to happen, other countries have no intention to use SDR since they already have USD.

However, before RMB reach the dominant position of USD, de-dollar countries will need to trade with any currencies which will make BRICS "SDR" equivalent necessary and the most practical solution.

When Europe and the Atlanticists refuse to learn from history

General Raputista still reigns supreme with a near millennium of being undefeated (Mongols being an exception)

About as silly as this girl right now:

For those unaware, this girl trashed her home country of China citing being able to 'breathe free' in america; she was basically a spoilt privileged brat who had her coming of age in america away from the responsibilities to her own family, basically a slightly less toxic version of Vicky Xu (if you can believe it)

MOSCOW, Jan 18 (Reuters) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov drew a sharp rebuke from the White House on Wednesday for saying the United States had assembled a coalition of European countries to solve "the Russian question" in the same way that Adolf Hitler had sought a "final solution" to eradicate Europe's Jews.

"How dare he compare anything to the Holocaust, anything. Let alone a war that they started," White House national security spokesman John Kirby said.

Lavrov, who caused an international furore last year with remarks about Hitler, said Washington was using the same tactic as Napoleon and the Nazis in trying to subjugate Europe in order to destroy Russia.

Using Ukraine as a proxy, he said, "they are waging war against our country with the same task: the 'final solution' of the Russian question."

"Just as Hitler wanted a 'final solution' to the Jewish question, now, if you read Western politicians ... they clearly say Russia must suffer a strategic defeat."

>Asking Germany to send tanks to the plains of Ukraine to fight Russians during winter

Perhaps they need Gerasimov to divide up the forces for SMO more clearly into 3 for Surovikin/Salyukov/Lapin and rename them with names like "1st Belorussian Front", "Steppe Front" and "3rd Ukrainian Front" to make it more obvious?
