Aircraft carriers are an antiquated and increasingly obsolescent weapons system. Cheap, expendable, modular, mobile floating airfields are gonna be the way of the future. Hope China builds that floating airfield/dock quickly and start experimenting with it as a carrier replacement ASAP.
Hmm no.. not even close. That would be a very naive way to look at things. While MOBs certainly has it's uses, replacing an aircraft carrier is not one of them. The primary advantage of a carrier is speed. A CSG can be anywhere in the world within 12 hours. With today's carriers, the hull speed is in excess of 30+ knots. much much more actually but true max v is 'classified'.
A modular MOB is going to take a week to construct at the very least by which time it may be all over!
It's also much more susceptible to attacks than a carrier whose location would be classified. It's difficult to hide the location of a MOB even if done in secrecy especially during times of a major conflict.
That's just one of 10 reasons I can think off which makes the carrier still a viable asset in the forseeable future.
Regardless, no matter the advancement is technology there will always be a 'mother' ship carrying smaller crafts for strike/attack roles.. That concept of a 'carrier' will be around for a long while IMHO.
