Are there any signs that China is planning or designing a new non-carrier surface combatant warship class in the near-to-medium term future beyond the current 052/054/055 classes? Or are they more likely to keep on upgrading the current classes with variants as need arises?

Separate question, is the type 055 somewhere around the heaviest missile ship class that makes sense cost-benefit wise, or is there room for a bigger cruiser/battlecruiser class in the future to bring additional capacity to PLAN?

Why is America under counting Chinese nuclear submarine fleet so much? I have to assume that they have better intel than the average PLA watcher, but their official estimates for Chinese SSN numbers by 2040 is 16. Which is a insane undercount, China might have amount in service by 2026 at the rate that they are churning the type 93B out, let alone future type 95 production. By contrast all their other estimates for the other types of warships are more realistic, also likely an undercount, but a lot better than what they are predicting for nuclear submarines.

So what gives?
They're basically worse than osint because they source from osint but unlike osint, China actively works to mislead and hide things from them. The only thing they have above osint is consistent paid quality satellite access, which is negated by China spending effort on deliberately fooling them.

Failing to get anything at all on 2 likely near trillion USD value air force projects in CAC and SAC is the final nail on the coffin of credibility.

The cycle:

Chinese intel sells a bridge to US intel and the most astroturfed report in history gets released -> awhile later Weibo rumors drop -> awhile later twitterites/osint pick up rumors -> China drops new thing -> the US report now looks stupid so they source pics from Weibo and rumors from osint then supplement it on a new report

Rinse and repeat.
