ASBM with anti-missile defensive mini missiles

Why not have an ASBM filled with cluster bomb guided submunitions. Or one filled with white phosphorus raining down on a ship(s)?

I don't think there can be an effective self-contained defensive mechanism for a weapon of that type. The only real effective way of protecting them from SM-3s is to have a separate system within range. That sort of goes against the point of having ASBMs in the first place. Plus you also have to remember there's a debate whether SM-3s or any other ballistic missile defense can work effectively in real war conditions or against that type of weapon. So you might not need it in the first place. That's why I suggested the AShMs. Because you just need to target an area within range of the AShM payload and let them do the rest. Depending on the range of the AShM, the SM-3 might be out of range or too late when they separate.

Why don't we just put mini missiles on ballistic missles, and then put mini-mini missles on the SM-3, and then put mini-mini mini missles on the mini missles to defend them from the mini-mini missles, it's ALL so simple and obvious!

yes, the beauty of redundancy and multi layered defense will enahnce one's survivability.:)

Well I just think that having a missile to attack the SM-3s is pointless, since you make things a lot easier by just letting the SM-3s target your sub-missiles instead. Why would you need to aim for a missile aimed at you? Just have the submunitions attack their targets and naturally the SM-3s will be spent trying to intercept those mssiles/bombs/whatevers. Just give the ship's radar/combat management systems more targets to deal with and force them to fire more SM-3s. Along the same principles as MIRV.
