It has been mentioned in this and other CV threads that the US should "sell off" it's decomissioned CV's.

Popeye, what about CVs currently in service which are scheduled to be decommissioned later this decade/early next decade - i.e. USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) and USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67)? Couldn't a buyer for them be found, rather than just letting them rust?

Internet roumor already has the Kennedy slated to be a musuem. I cannot find a link to prove it however.

The Kitty Hawk will be retired in 2008. It will probally be striken from the "Navy List" the same day.

The USN has no desire to maintain conventional CV's. I doubt seriously if either ship will be "sold off". The US DoD does not want those ships to fall into any "potential enemies" hands. No matter how deterioated the condition of the ship.

I just found this excellent painting of the USS Forrestal (CVA-59) circa 1955

When I was in Bremerton in '97/98, I saw maintenance workers leaving
CV-61; and was told that she was being maintained. The question arises: for possible future use by whom? Correct me if I'm wrong, but my guestimate is that they plan to plag the gap left by some serious casualty on active CV/CVN or for surge/training purposes, if not transfer to an ally.

That's 9 years ago. At that time Ranger may have been maintained. But right now it is on hold as a possible musuem ship according to the offical USN Naval registar site.

The Saratoga is also on hold to be a musuem.

CV's 59, 62 & 64 have all been stricken from the Navy list. They are in catagory "X". No maintance. Only fire and security watches.

Striken means;

Stricken
A ship or service craft formally removed from the Naval Vessel Register by SECNAV on recommendation of CNO. A legal preliminary to disposal.

The only service these ships now perform is parts for active duty CVN's. As you should know many parts are similar if not the same on USN CV's.

Popeye, here's a pic of note. It's CVN-77 after it was just launched.

Note the waterline...how high the carrier is sitting in the water, with just the top of the "bulbous bow" showing. In terms of where the vessel sits in the water...does it look familiar?

This is CVN-77 with engines installed, but no aircraft, no ballast, no crew, etc. Gives some perspective.

CVN-77 riding high just like the Varyag. Because it's empty. And trust me the engines are inatalled...No crew, fuel, aircraft, munitions, supplies & equipment etc..

Oh by the way. the 'sonar dome" will not have sonar. It may be added for later use. But it has been engineered to make the ship more seaworthy. I really don't understand this because being on a CV at sea is like being in a building that sways once in a while...They just ride smooth...:)

Hey BLUEJACKET how did the Kitty Hawk ride?

Isn't that bulb constructed for drag reasons ?
The wave created in front of that "bulb" interferes with the bow wave, resulting in lower "overal" bow waves; wich finally reduces drag.

Not being a naval engineer I would not know. Maybe Obi Wan knows. He has dabbled in Naval engineering.
