Fincantieri drew upon their experience building large civilian warships to build her. They never had built a warship this big before, so they fell back upon what they knew; building cruise ships and large cargo ships.
Also, if you look her up on Lloyd's Registry, she is civil-specced.

thats slightly different to a pure civvy spec as it might be influences by it but it still can be a mil build. Also i wonder how T-45 and the CVF are registered as they follow the latest civvy spec despite it being a mil build.

T-45 and CVF are registered, but they are registered under Lloyd's military spec classification. One of the drivers in Lloyds getting into classifying vessels for military use has probably been their Scandinavian competitors Det Norske Veritas (DNV) classifying paramilitary craft for Coast Guard work as well as the vessels of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

I found out why the French F-2 are operating on board CVN-71.
As you know carrier pilots need to be qualified to land on a CV. CVN-71 was available. I'm sure this French "deployment" on CVN-71 has been in the works for some time.
The FN R91 Charles de Gaulle is in the shipyard in Tulon for re-fit.
Remember the FN R91 has been beset with problem since the first steel was cut.
Given the French inablity to properly repair this ship what are the chances that the R91 will emerge from the shipyard in the spring of '09?? And if this happens will the French Navy again "deploy" to the US for carrier quals?
Any of you CV officanados have any ideas???

This is pretty much why the French do need a second carrier; they are usually a two carrier navy.
No! Cavour is fully build on militar standards... seems that Marina Militare will use militar standards even for their next LHDs!!!!!!!

Found a link on CdeG's Wikipedia entry to a cartoon from Le Parisien about the carrier's many problems.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and it's clear that going nuclear for CdeG was a huge mistake. France simply doesn't have the budget the develop a nuclear propulsion system suitable for a carrier so they have had to improvise and try offbeat solutions like the radical propellers, which didn't perform at all. With the money they spent on CdeG they may have been able to build 2 conventionally powered carriers. They're not going to get another carrier until at least the end of the next decade so they're going to have to make the best of a bad situation.
From what I understand the French have spent $5 Billion USD total on the ship. As you stated they could have had two conventional CVs for that price.
I know that in the past that workers from Newport News have repaired the ships catapults and arresting gear. In addition I think the new propellers for the ship were designed and built by Northrup-Grumman at Newport News.
