I will go out on a limb and predict that we will never see this vessel built. But that is just my opinion.

IMHO, if their naval bureau was going to put that much effort into a design, of that size and complexity...they would lose the ski ramp, have catapults, and a better angled deck.

I agree Jeff. The Russians for about eight years have been claiming they will build carrier. As of yet not a single slab of steel has been cut...I could only find an article dating back to 2008.. the older links are dead.;

And the Mistral ships built in a joint venture with France are a large deck amphibious vessels.

Aug. 21, 2014....ex-USS Saratoga (CV 60) under tow from Newport RI.

Below are some excellent photos of ex-USS Saratoga (CV-60) under tow off the coast of North Carolina. She's headed to ESCO Marine, a shipbreakers yard, in Brownsville TX.

Saratoga was decommissioned on August 20th,1994. These photos show what 20 years of no maintenance preservation can do.

Well Mistral kinda came close... Still the Russians keep making the claim and pushing the date. They certainly have the technology and theoretical capacity for a basic carrier. And with the technology share of Mistral class now they even have more advanced naval propulsion, navigation and command Control. I find it interesting that when the mistral class deal was announced i think there was a Russian Admiral who said it would have taken a decade for the Russians to develop a comparable type from scratch.

Given time perhaps. But I think it would be a lot of time.

Yes, but to commercial building standards. The Russians had a very tough time refurbing the Vikramaditaya, ultimatly getting it done far over budget and years and years behind schedule...and that was starting with a vessel of their own design.

Which, IMHO, just adds to my first point. If it would have taken them ten years to get to an LHD built to commercial standards, how long would it take for them to get to a full on Carrier?

And when/if they do, I still maintain that what they come up with, if they elect to go to a large deck deign, will probably not be what we see in that fan art.

But time will tell.

The problem for the Russians is that during the Soviet Union the main ship building facility was in the Ukraine. That is the Nikolyev shipyard. Earlier in the year when the Russians took over the Crimea peninsula i thought that they have regained control over the Nikolayev shipyard but that was not the case. The shipyard is located further to the west of the Crimea. A side from the shipyard there are hundreds of companies that supplies the building effort of an aircraft carrier. Those companies are spread throughout the former Soviet republics and many of them have long since then close their doors. For Russia to build that carrier its not enough to have a good design bureau and shipyard but they have to recreate that entire industrial base. That is at this point unlikely to happen. The Russians can build that ship only if they can get significant foreign assistance. That assistance won't be coming from the West these days. The only country that might help them in the future would be China. But untill China has her first aircraft carrier build and serving they won't be much of a help either as China at this point is trying to figure out how best to build their own first aircraft carrier themselves.

Well, given the economic conditions necessary, and the time, the Russians could do it. They did it before.

But as you say, almost all of the industrial base necessary has long since gone out of business, so they would have to start over.

But, they have the technical design capability, and the basic underlying resources. They just need the time, the money, and underlying infrastructure...and that will take a long time, if they do it at all.

Probably not till the mid to late 2020s soonest.
Yes...and for me, that would be when they started construction.

They need to get all of that infrastructure in place first...perhaps building off of what they must do to build the two additional Vladivosk vessels in Russia.

Couldn't India help out? Aren't they building their own indigenous carrier?
