Currently, many US Carrier air wings that deploy aboard the Nimitz class are made up of the followingIsn't a US carrier air wing made up of 4 squadrons of 12 to 16 F/A-18 Hornets/Super Hornets that's in total 48 to 64 fighters and if you add to that the helicopters, electronic warfare planes, AEW planes and transport planes. That's makes a total of about 90 planes. The Nimitz class can hold up to a maximum of 130 F/A-18's if needed.
12 x F/A-18F Superhornets
12 x F/A-18E Superhornets
12 x F/a-18E Superhornets
12 x F/A-C/D Hornets
4 x E/A-18G Growlers (or E/A-6B Prowlers)
4 x E-2C/D Hawkeyes
2 x C-2 Greyhounds
5 x SH-60 Seahawks
Or about 63 aircraft. This number can change, as can the composition, depending on the mission.
They are certainly capable of carrying more...and in any serious wartime scenario would probably carry closer to 80 aircraft.
