Popeye, Kwaig, and any others who have served any appreciable time on US Navy aircraft carriers.

What do you guys think about the new stern configuration of the USS Gerald R. Ford as compared to earlier carriers?

This is one change that has not gotten much attention, but they have significantly widened the spaces to the stern.

One side includes a widening of the hanger back there. The other side included new machinary and testing shops.

Well thanks to the link you provided about accommodations that look may be do to the fact that the berthing compartments are no larger tan thirty persons. Also there is more than likely increase aviation maintenance facilities. Aboard Nimitz the paraloft was on the stern on the starboard side on the 02 level. It was long and narrow. I imagine if it near the same location now it must be much larger.

Here's another view of one side and the extension.

Jeff I meant to say starboard side 02.. no matter, that is an section of much larger size than an Nimitz class.

If you view the artist renderings I believe a RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) system will be atop the starboard quarter just like on a Nimitz class..

Yep. Here are all four quarters and the weapons systems.

On the Forward Port Quarter you have a RAM launcher, and then further back, amidships, a Phalanx CIWS.

On the Aft Port Quarter you have an ESSM launcher.

On the stern you have a Phalanx CIWS, and then on the Aft Starboard Quarter you have a RAM launcher.

On the Forward Starboard Quarter you have an ESSM launcher and a CIWS.

That will make for a total of:

2 x Mark 49 RAM launchers for RIM-116 missiles. 42 missiles total
2 x Mark 29 Mod 5 ESSM launchers for RIM-162 missiles. 16 missiles total ready.
3 x Mk-15 20mm Phalanx CIWS

Very good self defenses.

Royla Navy said:
HMS Monmouth helps mammoth INdian aircraft carrier through Channel.

The 4,900 tonne frigate met up with the newest Indian aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya – weighing in at a massive 45,000 tonnes and helped her safely through the busy English Channel.

Originally built for the Russian Navy as a modified Kiev class aircraft carrier, called Baku in 1987, India procured her in 2004 and she was accepted by the Indian Navy in a commissioning ceremony in November 2013.

Following successful sea trials in July 2013 and aviation trials in September 2013 the carrier began her long journey to her new home of India escorted by auxiliary INS Deepak and Talwar class frigate INS Trikand.

HMS Monmouth’s Operations Officer, Lt Cdr Chris Hollingworth, said:

“I was impressed at the scale the Vikramaditya, which displaces twice as much as HMS Illustrious.

“As the 65,000 tonne Queen Elizabeth Carriers are half as big again we will have quite formidable ships to operate in the near future.”

With HMS Illustrious due to visit India over Christmas the interaction with the Indian’s newest ship could not have been more timely. INS Vikranaditya also paid a visit to Portsmouth Naval base during the summer.

Celebrating her 20th year in commission, the escorting duty is HMS Monmouth’s last commitment before return home to Plymouth to prepare for a major refit throughout 2014.

The Vikramaditya is currently also escorted by the 4,000 ton INS Gudied-missile Frigate Trikand, F51 (Talwar class FFG) and the 27,500 ton INS replenishment vessel, Deepak, A50.

Two more Inidan Navy vessels, the 6,700 ton guided missile destroyer Delhi, D61, and another guided missile frigate (Probably a 6,200 ton Shivilak FFG) will join with the Virkamaditya near the Straits of Gibraltor.

Well if you want my honest opinion I may have mention that I don't care too much for the hmm bigass look or should I say 'enhanced posterior' but it appears that the redesign extension does not in any way impede the handling, seaworthiness nor negatively affect the performance of the ship so I say go for it. As big a a falttop is there are also a lot of people and a lot of things in it.

Extra space is always welcome. At the end of the day an aircraft carrier's primary mission is to launch and recover aircraft as quickly as possible. Everything else is secondary.
Since it's at the stern on main deck and 1 and 2, I imagine it'll be additional workshops, engine test room and the additional space may even increase hanger space and sortie rates due to the enhanced flight deck.
May also have additional or enlarged ready room for the standbys.. what do you think bd?

Not sure haven't done too much research on the Ford yet.
