Omg this year has been a flat top frenzy!

And its still not over!

I think it's cyclical in nature because carriers take such a long time to build and commission. You'll see the initial frenzies then followed by a lull couple years as the next one is slowly being build and the initial one going on a 2-3 years pre commissioning and fitting out period.

After CVN 78, the JFK won't be ready till at least 2018 and commission in 2020. Same thing with PLAN... after Liaoning I see at least until 2016 at the very earliest before PLAN launches another carrier. QE will launch sometime next year but most likely until 2016 before commissioning into the fleet. INS Vik same thing as well.

I think toward the end of this decade we'll see even more carriers coming online. By then you'll have Ford fully commissioned, JFK pretty much ready to join the fleet, same with R01, r02 nearing completion and possibily Liaoning's sister ship. I would surmise PLAN will at that time would have also started cutting steel for their first true CV. Same with India. The INS Vikrant will be commissioning about the same time as these carriers as well.

There'll probably be a bunch of 'smaller' vessels 20-40K joining their respective fleets as well in the form of LHAs LPD or heli/Stovl carriers.

I don't know why you quoted me I was asking about Russian navy commandos.
on the subject though I do believe that a second carrier will come it will have a equal complement of fighters to the Kud and be roughly the same size but with the same kind of propulsion as the Vladivostok.

lol my bad for some reason i thought you mentioned a carrier there! so many flat tops kicking around couldnt help myself!

Well, we can map it out.

Here's what's happening currently (launching in the 2013-2014 time frame)

CURRENT NAVAL AVIATION CARRIERS (Launching 2013-2014)

CV Carriers
USS Ford, CVN-78 (USN)
HMS Quess Elizabeth, R08 (RN)
INS Vlikramaditya (Indian Navy)
INS Vikrant (Indian Navy)

CVH Helicopter Carriers
JS Izumo, DDH-183 (JMSDF)

LHD/A Amphibious/Air Assault Carriers
USS America, LHA-6 (USN)
HMAS Canberra, L02 (RAN)
Vladivostok (RUS)

That's eight large, flat deck carriers coming out now. All of the above will commission in the intervening time frame. Here's what will be coming in the next six to seven years:

FUTURE NAVAL AVIATION CARRIERS (Launching 2019-2020)

CV Carriers
2nd Chinese Carrier (PLAN)
USS John Kennedy, CVN-79 (USN)
HMS Prince of Wales, R09 (RN)
INS Viraat (India Navy)
Brazilian Carrier (Brazil)

CVH Helicopter Carriers
2nd Izumo (JMSDF)

LHD/A Amphibious/Air Assault Carriers
USS Tripoli, LHA-7 (USN)
HMAS Adelaide, L01, (HMAS)
2nd Vladivostock (RUS)
1st Chinese LHD (PLAN)a

That will be ten more in that time frame. Plenty to look forward to.

Provisionally we could probably put the name Minas Gerais next to the Brazilians next carrier. As traditionally Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais are the top ships in the Brazilians fleet.

I beleive you are correct...but until they officially announce the name, I do not want to "assume," if you know what I mean.

Jeff, thanks for mapping them out.. like I said 2013-2014 slight lull in between then 2018-2020 will see a lot of new launches again. In between will be some commissioning here and there.. When the second 'carrier surge' hits again we'll also be seeing a whole bunch of new fighters joining their respective fleets. F-35s will be common place by then and it's quite likely PLAN will have their own navalized stealth fighter to complement the J-11/J-15s.

Yes, you were exactly right.

By the time the John Kennedy is launched, the F-35s will be in service onboard LHAs, LHDs, and Carriers.

We will see a lot during that time. For example, will the Japanese fund some F-35Cs? If they do, it will be a clear indication of them putting to sea with those aircraft.

In addition, it will be very interesting to see what the Chinese do with additional aircraft for their carriers, and where they are with their second carrier and a potential LHD.

Also, we will see what progess the Russians make with their TA-50.

The Indians will have their Migs operating off of two carriers in that time frame and we will see if they go ahead and use their own Tejas aircraft as well which are being built to be carrier capable light attack aircraft like the A-4...not to mention their third carrier being launched in that time frame.

As I say, pleany of naval technology and happenings to wet all of our whistles!

French Navy nuclear-powered Aircraft Carrier Charles de Gaulle out at sea for Pilot Training
fW8mX58.jpg

The aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle (CVN R91) left Toulon naval base on October 16 with its full crew and airwing onboard (Rafale, Super-Etendard Modernisé, Hawkeye, Dauphin helicopter). The training will focus mainly on the validation of pilot skills in two consecutive phases.

The first phase, commonly called "École de l’Aviation Embarquée" (Carrier-borne Aviation School), will qualify rookie French naval aviation pilots for day and night carrier operations. For some of those young pilots this will be their first landing on the deck of Charles de Gaulle CVN.

The second phase will consist in training newly qualified pilots as well as veteran pilots in the conduct of operational missions from the aircraft carrier.

The French know what they are doing and train their pilots, and exercise them well.

The following is one of my favorite pics of the Charles de Gaulle. Shows a full air wing (well you can see 26 aircraft) on deck, and clearly shows the Aster VLS cells on the starboard bow sponson.
