Well, the have the four Kongos and the two Atagos so they have six. But they are busily building newer designs of their own. They have finished building and launching all which have an equivalent system to AEGIS which can also data link to it and perform cooperative engagement with it. So there's ten. They also have the five Takinami Class which are very similarly armed to the newer Akizuki. So that's fifteen.

The improved Akizuki is coming next, 4-6 of then before 2020, so that will be 19 to 21. So they are building rapidly too.

Clearly, the Japanese are now standardizing on their own, new AEGIS-like system. Both Hyugas have it, all four of the Akizukis have it, the new Kaga carriers (22DDH) of this thread have it, and the follow on to the Akizukis will have it too.

That will be a total of 12-14 vessels by 2020 with that new dual mode system, plus their six AEGIS vessels.

although this is true if JMSDF really wants to be able to provide ballistic missile shield then it does so by more Atagos and Kongos not the Akizuki Class which is a much lighter vessel , there is a clear seperation in these classes

adding 2-4 more Arleigh Burke Class 10,000 ton ships would enhance JMSDF much further and infact this is exactly what is being proposed, although im not sure of the exact class

Holy J-umm! Look at the size of this monster, so many years we have been hearing of this but always was hard to get pictures and information was hard to come by, it is easier following PLAN ships than this JMSDF vessel and I think I know why, because this is going to send alarm bells ringing throughout Asia

Hell of a flat top that is! Very very nice

Re: Carrier Proliferation: 2012-1014

Add this one to the "launched" category. Carriers are popping out all over the world, particularly in the PAcific.

is that really 20,000 tons? even full load 27,000 tons seems bit short? looks to be >30,000 tons
Well, the Hyugas are 20,000 full load. This one is 815ft long, a little larger beam, and so an additional 7,000 tons seems reasonable. They say 27,000 tons, I guess once she is fully outfitted and loaded with aircraft and their provisions we shall know.

If they just put nine helos on her and the provisions, fuel, etc, for that, maybe they can keep it at 27,000 tons...but she is capable of a lot more than that, and I expect should they completely load her up with 24-30 aircraft and all of the fuel, provisions, armament, etc.. for that, we may see that number increase.

what you state is more than likely true. However...is the berthing installed to accommodate a larger crew? JMSDF ships are not permitted to have berthing areas larger than 6 bunks per stateroom for lower enlisted. I state this because the more aircraft are aboard the more sailors will be required to perform maintenance.

They do have berthing for several hundred Marines. I would expect that in a scenario where they added more aircraft, they would use that berthing to accomodate the pilots, maintenance personnel, deck handlers, etc. necessary to accomodate the larger niumber of aircraft and have correspondingly less Marine berthing.

Hi, popeye, is the use of the word stateroom for the space for berthing of six enlisted men also one of those Americanisms that amazes us Europeans?
