Great photo navyreco!

Where was the CdeG FN R91 located when that photo was taken? I ask because I see a boat(ferry) on the stern that is similar to the many types of boast used to ferry sailors on liberty/shore leave to shore.

The picture was taken off Cannes last month...

As part of the rise to power of the carrier battle group, 29 March 2012, the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle conducted a test firing of Aster 15 missile while underway in the Mediterranean.
...
The objective of the test firing was to check the status of live ammunition, the proper functioning of the SAAM weapon system and train the crew in the handling and implementation of such weapon.

1 year old article, but I believe most here will enjoy it, especially for the sake of comparision

ABOARD THE CHARLES DE GAULLE -- U.S. Navy Lt. Patrick Salmon is getting ready for another day at work, strapping himself into the cockpit of his strike jet and roaring off this French aircraft carrier for his daily attack mission against Moammar Gadhafi's ground forces.
...
Caldwell, who has worked on several U.S. carriers, said the similarities between the two navies outweigh the differences, and said the major distinction was the number of sorties he handles a day.

"On U.S. carriers we trap about 160 aircraft a day at sea, but here it's just 35-40 a day," he said. "Also, on U.S. carriers we're able to launch and trap aircraft at the same time, but because of the shorter size here we need to close the carrier deck for each operation."

Good article. I posted that article sometime ago. I think. I know at mp.net I questioned the FN sortie rate..forgetting they have fewer aircraft aboard their CVN....embarrassing..

Great article never the less. Worth a re-visit.

One more thing..From what I understand it takes the Russians about two weeks to make 40 landings.

+1 BD Popeye... 35-40 traps a day means at least some of the MN jets fly a couple sorties per day... To achieve 160, that would be impossible with just a couple dozen jets (if not slightly less) onboard.

What is interesting too IMO is that "exchange programs" stay unchanged even in real combat situations...

In this case a USN pilots flying combat missions on a SEM.
I remember a French CSAR helo pilot flying CSAR missions in a HH-60 (or the likes) for the USAF in A'stan too...

Outstanding pic of the CDG. She's developed into a very effective CVN and the French are the only other country in the world who have proved capable of building and operating one. Hopefully they will build the other CV to join and relieve her...though it is slated to be conventionally powered.

By year end, India will have a new carrier

INS Vikramaditya (ex-Russian Carrier "Admiral Gorshkov") to start sea trials on May 25
A Former Russian aircraft carrier (Soviet-built Admiral Gorshkov) which was being refurbished for the Indian Navy is being prepared to begin its first set of sea trials. These trials are expected to last through the spring and end with a delivery to the Indian Navy planned for late 2012.

The vessel, which was originally intended for the Soviet Navy, but then refitted for India, will be taken to the White Sea and then to the Barents Sea where it will stay for three to four months.

“After sea trials are complete, we plan to transfer the carrier to India by December 4,” Sevmash said.

On April 5th 2012, aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle started the FANAL 2012 exercise in the Mediterranean Sea. This exercise involves the entire Carrier Battle Group (CVBG) until mid-April.

In a scenario simulating a crisis situation, the aircraft carrier and the carrier air group (CAG) will be escorted by the Chevalier Paul air defense destroyer , Dupleix and Montcalm anti-submarine frigates, the EV Jacoubet light frigate and Emeraude nuclear powered attack submarine. An Atlantique 2 maritime patrol aircraft is also participating in the exercise.

Objective: To train all of CVBG units to fight together against multiple threats in a realistic and fully operational environment, according to NATO procedures.
