Re: Aircraft Carriers

I found these pics of the seldom seen Thia CV on the US DoD web site. They were taken in 2001.

The Royal Thai Naval vessel HTMS CHAKRINARUEBET (CVH 911) in the South China Sea. (Released to Public) DoD photo by: PH3 ALEX C. WITTE, USN Date Shot: 3 Apr 2001

Nice pics...but really for show and to exercise her machinary.

One Harrier and one helo is all I see, so clearly, unless there are a whole lot more in that small hangar, she was not out doing any air ops exercises or training.

It has always been interesting to me that the Thais have that vessel. Their ability to escort and protect it is very limited so I have to presume it is mainly to show the flag and out of a sense of national pride...and to perform humanitarian assistance. Military wise it would have little impact by the Thais alone IMHO, but might be useful in concert with other nations who could protect it and make use of an airwing of Harriers if the Thais could manage to pull an entire wing together.

Re: Aircraft Carriers

^^^ man Jeff, I was wondering where you dug up that old post..

Long time ago I made a suggestion that the Chinese should have purchased the RTN HTMS CHAKRINARUEBET (CVH 911) as a starter CV or a training ship. Apparently the Thai's have never been willing to part with their CV.. a matter of pride you know.

It has to be remembered that for the Thais, it isn't about having a fully operational carrier (although it was originally when the ship was ordered and delivered), due to the worsening economic situation they have shelved that idea and now the ship is simply a matter of national pride; that is to say they can turn to their neighbours and smugly say 'we have one, and you don't!'. Possession really is 9/10ths of the law in this case. For these reasons they won't be putting her up for sale anytime soon. She does make a very impressive Royal Yacht too...

Speaking of the Thais... I just received this press release. Seems like they are starting to spent/invest money in their carrier again

The defence and security company Saab has received an order from the Royal Thai Navy for the upgrading of the command and control system on the aircraft carrier H.T.M.S. Chakri Naruebet. The order amounts to MSEK 180.

The contract involve upgrading the aircraft carrier with the latest generation of command and control system, 9LV Mk4. Saab will also supply data-link equipment to the ship, which will allow communication between the ship and the Royal Thai Air Force’s Gripen fighter aircraft and the airborne radar system Erieye, carried by the Saab 340 AEW.

India's carrier programe is no finally advancing towards sea trials in this summer, and I think they plan to induct the ship into their navy at the end of this year.

India’s Vikramaditya aircraft carrier prepares for sea trials
By: Greg Waldron Singapore - 14 hours ago

Sea trials of India's latest aircraft carrier will start "this summer", with the work to involve the launch and recovery of fixed-wing aircraft from INS Vikramaditya.

Although the Indian navy says it has received all 16 RSK MiG-29K/KUBs - 12 single-seat fighters and four two-seat trainers - from a 2004 order, the trials will be carried out using Russian aircraft flown by Russian pilots.
The aircraft used in the trials are likely to be a purpose-built MiG-29K and a MiG-35D twin-seat demonstrator. An Indian navy team will also be present during the tests. ...

Well, that looks like one of the Indian Mig-29Ks being qualed on the Russian Carrier right there

Funny then, that the Russians will qual the Indian Carrier with their own aircraft instead of the Indians. Sounds like they are getting as much practcse and qual time in for their own aircraft as possible at the Indian's expense.

Clealy, once the Indians take delivery, they will go full steam ahead in qualifying the carrier for their own pilots and I expect the

will be fully flight qual'ed and operational before the Chinese carrier is.

The J-15's for the Chinmese carrier have not been built yet, whereas the Indians already have their aircraft and are practicing with the aircraft that will make up the airwing as we speak...they are just waiting for the Russian shipyards to finish and qual the carrier and hand it over to them.

US Navy launches official Request for Information (RFI) for F/A-XX strike fighter
The US Navy has launched mid-April an official RFI for the F/A-XX carrier-based strike fighter. The F/A-XX is intended to replace both F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighter and EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft currently in service in the US Navy by the years 2030ies.

The official RFI for the sixth generation fighter, issued by the Department of the Navy Naval Air Systems Command Aircraft Division, goes as follow:

The Director for Air Warfare (OPNAV N98) has requested NAVAIR Warfare Analysis and Integration Department (AIR-4.10) to conduct trade space refinement as a precursor to an analysis of alternatives for candidate strike fighter aircraft replacements for the FA-18E/F and EA-18G.

CAPABILITY DESCRIPTION:
The intent of this research is to solicit Industry inputs on candidate solutions for CVN based aircraft to provide multi-role capability in an A2AD operational environment. Primary missions include, but are notlimited to, air warfare (AW), strike warfare (STW), surface warfare (SUW), and close air support (CAS). Also consider the ability of your concept to provide other capabilities currently provided by strike fighteraircraft, such as organic air-to-air refueling (AAR), Tactical Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition (RSTA), and airborne electronic attack (AEA).

[...]

As a top level summary of some of the required system capabilities, the air vehicle should be capable of addressing the following needs:

1.Capable of operating from CVN 68 and CVN 78 class aircraft carriers, as part of the Carrier AirWing (CVW), with minimal impact on the ship configuration and the operations of the rest of theCVW.

2.This aircraft will be a complementary CVW asset to the F-35C and an unmanned persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) vehicle with precision strike capability.

3.The ability to conduct persistent, penetrating operations in an A2AD operational environment.

4.The ability for an IOC in the 2030 timeframe. If a spiral approach to incorporation of systems and/or technology to achieve full operational capability is employed, provide the timeline toachieve full capability

Re: Aircraft Carriers

That is a Boeing concept they have been showing off at every event relating too naval fighters and aviation. here are a few of the other versions I have seen note it's taking a twin engine tailless configuration that looks kinda like a cross between the A12 and F22.
