This article shows an excellent reason for China not to go the big deck nuclear carriers: The investment pattern is too inflexible to allow delaying the building of a carrier without incurring large technical costs. American politicians are mostly accountants and lawyers, Chinese politicians are mostly engineers.

IMO the trend toward automation and UAV's will reduce the carrier's size & tonnage requirement. But we shall see.

Thank you popeye for this very interesting listing. Quite clearly i was wrong about the accountants. But law is over-represented and scientist and engineers are rare: five engineers, six scientists and half a dozen equivalently educated people. With more engineers you couldn't have the JSF project accepted with development and production in parallel, to give just an obvious example.

This presupposes a flexibility in the building pattern of aircraft carriers that is lacking in the US practice. Smaller carriers combined in the production sequence with other large naval vessels as LHA, LPD, LHD , all with similar propulsion plant, might give you that flexibility. The carriers would have double the power plants of the others, I expect.

If the Russians can accomplish this wih the SU-33s, then definitely the J-15 will be able to do the same. I have no doubts that the PLAN will make sure of it.

Jeff, here's a link to the rest of those Cavour photos...
And here's a link to a GREAT read about the Japanese Maritime Defense Forces history, rational and strategy for their Hyuga and upcoming 22DDH carriers. Excellent article for anyone desiring to understand how the Japanese came to their decisions about these vessels and their strategy for their use.

And for Obi Wan, here are some neat pictures of the RN Sea Vixen which should conjur up some memories of those days when the RN operated real carriers in the hopes that in a few years they will do so again:

Cheers for those Jeff. The Sea Vixen has long been a favourite of mine, with it's eccentric crew layout (pilot offset to port and RIO in USN parlance sat down inside the 'coal hole' next to him). Pilots could forget they were in a two seater on occassion, and as the Observer (RIO) had no vision outside the aircraft beyond a small window on his right that was normally covered anyway, landings were a matter of blind faith for them. One pilot was reported to have a habit of talking out loud as he was on approach to the carrier, and was in the habit of giving a rather pessimistic running commentary including terms such as "Oh dear, that doesn't look good", "That's torn it", "Oh Bloody Hell!". Not the sort of thing you want to hear from your pilot in whose hands you have entrusted your life. Said Pilot was given a talking to shortly thereafter by the sqn's Senior Observer, and kept his negative thoughts to himself from then on!

I knew you would like those pics Obi Wan, and hoped you might through in an old story or two regarding the same...and was duly rewarded!

I always wondered why, with that arrangement, they didn't just build a tandem cockpit across there? Seems like they could have done so, since in essence the ROI is sitting next to the pilot anyway, albeit down lower.

Still looking forward to seeing the QE launched and set up for CATOBAR operations and for the day the RN receives their first F-35Cs!
