BOSTON (May 29, 2011) Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) the Honorable Ray Mabus announces the name of the next nuclear powered aircraft carrier as USS John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Kevin S. O'Brien/Released)
I served on the original USS John F Kennedy (CVA 67). While I do not feel Carriers should be named after politicians I do not disagree with the naming of this ship. Pres Kennedy should have received a Medal of honor for his heroic actions in WWII.

How do you carrier aficionados feel??

Fully agree. Proper names should be traditional carrier names-Enterprise, Yorktown, Lexington, Saratoga, Essex, Wasp, Hornet ect.

Naming capital ships after politicians (With the possible exception of the founding fathers) is not in the spirit of the Republic. And-to be honest-the founding fathers would probably be appalled to have warships named after them. There are plenty of great battles to name them after... and gallant sea warriors as well.

Thank you cirvine11. I really feel only the new LHA-6 America class will be given the traditional/historic names. Look for LHA-7 to be named Enterprise.

I really hope not. The name Enterprise has such a history to it... that I think it ought to given to a front line CVN. Not that LHA's are not front line warships. They are. But I think you get my drift.

I do not like it. I had hoped for Enterprise and will continue to push for that name for one of the Ford Class. It's heritage and tradition as a US fighting ship, and particularly as a US Navy aircraft carrier is unequaled and should be continued.

Jeff I hear you. I too wanted CVN 78 or 79 named Enterprise. But the politicians that run the show have different ideas.

still a chance with cvn 80. I said before I would rather a traditional name but am okay with founding fathers and great presidents incuding JFK

I thought the new tradition was to name CVN's after recent prominent politicians. Think of CVN 74. There will always be enough senators who would enjoy this.
