Rumors are floating that the Navy is looking too replace the C2-R greyhound In the Carrier on board deliver role with V22 and since the C2 is the same airframe more or less then the E3 Hawkeye It would not be that great a step. I hope they build it for the AEWC and they then make a Air too Air Tanker version too extend the operational Range of F35B's and C's ( see the Second pic posted by Jeff ) other versions have been suggested for ASW and some even imagine a gunship.

Back in the days before email the C-2 and C-1 were a carriers sailors favorite aircraft. Because that's how you got your mail. These are sweet words when passed on the 1mc.. "COD on deck with mail!"..

Supercarrier the USS George H.W. Bush (Pic: PA)

A giant aircraft carrier which is the world's newest and most powerful surface ship dropped anchor off the UK today in order for its crew to make a port visit.
A total of 5,300 sailors from the US Navy's aircraft carrier USS George HW Bush are expected to visit Portsmouth, Hampshire, following the ship's arrival this morning.
The vessel has to anchor off Stokes Bay because it is too large to fit into Portsmouth Harbour.

The warship completed war games in UK waters with HMS Dauntless and HMS Gloucester from the Royal Navy before its arrival in the Solent.
A Royal Navy spokesman said: "The 97,000-ton Bush carries in excess of 70 aircraft from eight squadrons and 5,300 sailors and aircrew.
"The 1,100ft nuclear-powered supercarrier, commissioned at the beginning of 2009, is too large to enter Portsmouth Harbour so dropped anchor in the sheltered waters of Stokes Bay.
"Two other foreign vessels from the exercise - the destroyer USS Truxtun and the Spanish frigate ESPS Almirante Juan De Borbon - will spend the weekend in Portsmouth Naval Base."
Exercise Saxon Warrior is one of the largest war games hosted by the Royal Navy in UK waters in recent years with other Nato forces, plus RAF and British Army units also taking part.
The USS George HW Bush is set to depart on Tuesday morning.

Just heard about it on the local tv news today, I remember my brother when he was based at HMS Dolphin (Gosport) used to joke about US CVNs visiting Pompey, using the Isle of Wight as a mooring Bouy! Then he'd remark that for every ten WRENS who went out 'on the trap' for US sailors, seven would 'catch a dose'. Sour grapes? Possibly, but then he never had any problems finding female company in those days (he's married now for the last sixteen years). I'll try and get a look at her over the weekend.

In other carrier news, the British press has been reporting the deployment of AAC Apaches to Libya, some have even mentioned they will be operated from HMS Ocean but almost none of them have used the word 'Carrier', hardly surprising as they have universally reported that after Ark Royal was paid off we have no carriers left. Apart from HMS Ocean. And HMS Illustrious. Oh and not forgetting RFA Argus, which has already been operating off Libya as a base for special forces helos. But you didn't hear that from me...

Obi Wan, yes we can't upset the media narrative.

This is the media that frequently refers to "battleships", "gunboats" and "cruisers" (no, not the Ticos!).

We've had a couple of Type 42 Destroyers return to Pompey to pay off in recent months (HMS Manchester and HMS Gloucester) and although both events were given coverage on the local BBC TV news, they sent young female reporters to report and both times they referred them as 'Massive 3,500 tonne Battleships'.

Well petal as we say back in my native North East, If you think that's massive, you are in for a shock when the new carriers arrive!

As I understand it, it's like a special ceremony they hold before decomissioning. I believe it goes back to older ships when the crew was "paid off" before the end of the commission.

Here's a description I found on a

:

Until 1825 some pay was held back as a guarantee against desertion. It was the practice to pay off the men at the end of a commission, hence the expression, a ship paying off.

At the end of a commission each man was given a pay ticket, which could be cashed at the Admiralty. But as the men had insufficient funds to go to London money lenders came to the home ports and paid as little as 60% of the value of the pay tickets. After 1728 men were paid aboard ship after returning to their homeport.

Paying off in current parlance is the point/date at which a ship ends it's service life back in it's homeport, after which the decommishoning process begins, ie de storing and de ammunitioning and then stripping of re useable parts. Also RN ships 'Pay Off' prior to beginning refits. As Jeff said Paying off is basicly the ceremonial last day in service starting with final entry into port and ending with the lowering of the white ensign. The bulk of the crew depart the ship immediately thereafter for leave and reassignment leving a skeleton crew to begin the decommissioning process.
