AEGIS and AEGIS Like escort combatants of the World

I'm just a complaining Dutchman. My country was called until 1795 a Republic of the Seven Provinces, in Dutch formally "Republiek der Zeven Vereenigde Nederlanden". Therefore a famous flag ship in the 17th century was called "De Zeven Provincien" (see

) and after this ship the lead ship of this class was named.

Outstanding. Thanks for the history lesson. I did not know that history of the lead ship. Very appropriately named and there are four of them.

40 cell Mk-41 with SM-2 and quad pack ESSM (what are they outfitting, 32 SM2 and 32 ESSM?) a five inch gun, eight harpoons, two 30mm goalkeepers, two x 3 torpedoe tubes, NH-90 ASW helo....and the SEAWACO XI system and that Smart-L 3D radar. Great vessels! The Dutch have every right to be very proud of these.

Great work Jeff!

It just seems ridiculous to the point of being comical that the USN almost have twice as many AEGIS ships as the rest of the world combined.

Although I do wonder, have you omitted the 051C because you do not consider it to be AEGIS like or just because everyone including the PLAN seems to want to pretend they just didn't happen? :p

In my description of AEGIS-Like I listed several things I use for my own requirements for a vessel to be included. One is PARS, which the Type 051C does not include.

If the Type 051C can work in a cooperative engagement mode with the Type 052Cs or the new Type 052Ds, they would be a great addition to those groups. Added to that, I believe that even on their own they are strong Long Range AAW escorts...just not up to the AEGIS-like definition I have made.

Why don't the Russians have any AEGIS-like vessels? Is it money, technology or doctrine?

The Russian navy has had not progressed much in anything over the last few decades... And PAR equipped AAW ships have only sprung up in the last few decades.

But the new gorshkov class frigate does feature some sort of fixed PAR on its mast and boasts a decent load of SAMs.

In my description of AEGIS-Like I listed several things I use for my own requirements for a vessel to be included. One is PARS, which the Type 051C does not include.

Technically, 051C does feature a single top dome phased array radar, but obviously that leaves half the ship exposed.

But I fully agree that they do not quantify as aegis-like vessels.

Like plawolf, I also wish 051C never happened and they had ended up building two 052Cs in their place or even 054As, but at least they're semi capable...

Jeff, on your chart you label canada as having 3 aegis like vessels, which ships are those? I do not recall the RCN having any aegis like ships. Unless you're talking about the iroquois class?

Well considering the USN itself weighs more than the next ten largest navies added together or something like that, the fact that their aegis vessel number is greater than the rest of the world combined... isn't so ridiculous :p

Well, the large nuclear crusiers and Slava Class come close. They certainly have the VLS and some sort of battle management...but their sensors are lacking in terms of true PARS...you could almost list the Kuznetsov in their because it too has numerous VLS, PARS and battle management...but all the VLS are relatively short range and I do not know the extent of their battle management or the capabilities of their sensors like we do these others. Apparenbtly the PLAN felt it necessary to replace them with their own.

Good catch, just a mistake on my part and I do not know why. That should be Australia and maybe I will have to fixed by the next time you look at it (or refresh it). Those three are the Hobarts and I must have had a brain loss for a moment and labeled them Canada for some reason. The Iroquis are nice vessels, but they are not AEGIS-Like.

------ Later ------

Take a look now. Voila! Australia!

Actually I believe the Mars Passat PARs were never implemented on kuznetsov, due to various difficulties, cutting back on funding etc and what we see are just metal slabs. (Sidenote, gorshkov was the first vessel meant to be fitted with mars passat+fregat combo, but mars passat was a failure. So now the virkam is only equipped with fregat as well. If Mars Passat was a viable system I'm sure the indians would've requested it be retained aboard vikram. Interesting to note PLAN went with SAPARS+sea eagle combo on liaoning, which is basically a 21st century peer to the intended mars passat+fregat aboard gorshkov/kuznetsov)

And considering Varyag was an empty hull when she was towed to china and the ability of indigenous industry to produce weapons and electronics that can meet or exceed late cold war soviet technology, I would've been very surprised if PLAN decided to fit kashtan or gauntlet ciws :p
