I see a lot comparison between 2008 and 2022. But as a Chinese I thought the biggest difference is that in 2008 we were trying to show the world who we were and in 2022 we are trying show to ourselves who we are. in 2008 China was saying "we are as good as you, don't you think?" in 2022 I think of China as a dancer, fully immersed in the joy of expressing herself, much less concerned about trying to wow the audience.

I think young patriots in Taiwan felt that too.

Interesting that Yuzuru Hany got almost the same level of fawning coverage in China as Eileen Gu, whereas Nathan Chen is pretty much invisible.
I actually think that's great. I am proud of China's diversity and that Chinese people generally able to move past old wounds and appreciate the good. I myself have very mixed feelings about Japan/Japanese. I love watching hezhimeng and appreciate many people's effects on both side to improve relationship.

I live in the US and have a few very good American friends. I am against US hegemony, racism, and idiocy. but I also appreciate the many good things about the US and American people. So that's another layer of reason I cheer for Chen over Hanyu.

I felt the same way. 2008 China was trying hard to prove itself. 2022 China is confident of itself and doesn't care what others think, other than trying to spread the message of together for shared future which has been printed on Chinaaid boxes since forever

The little dove heading back to family was the biggest highlight. Instantly turned the performance from a meh 6 into a solid 10 for me. Absolutely beautiful message.
