The Chinese national anthem is played and HK gives "Chinese nationals" extra medal opportunites.

If HK athletes compete under Chinese banner, all you do is cannibalize your own competitor slots opportunities, since each nation has a fixed quota of athletes it can send to each discipline/sport.

Sino-world team size:
  • China: 406
  • Chinese Taipei: 68
  • Hong Kong, China: 42
  • Singapore: 23
  • TOTAL: 539
Anglo-world team size:
  • US: 613
  • AUS: 478
  • UK: 376
  • CAN: 371
  • NZ: 211
  • TOTAL: 2,049

HK has 10% competitor slots of entirety of China. So China should be exporting it's surplus talents to HK for competitor slot opportunities. Merging HK's slots will just cannibalize yourself with less slots and more opportunity for Anglo-nations. And unlike Anglo-nations, China can actually claim Hong Kong, China and Chinese Taipei as wins of their own.

For what its worth, Singapore doesn't count. We wouldn't count Brazil with part of Portugal either. Macau on the other hand is hard china. I don't know how big their contingent at the olympics is.

For Anglo-world comparison purposes, Singapore is 80% ethnic Han Chinese, so it's definitely part of the Sino world. China can't claim Singapore as its own win, but that's obvious.

I gave this some thought, and I have to say that I honestly don't care about how many medals China gets. I used to, but not anymore. I don't think China has anything more to prove in the Olympics. If tomorrow, China fell to 99th place in medals, that just means it has stopped funding Olympic programs. It has no bearing on the state of Chinese society.

I think HK should compete under the Chinese banner because the current arrangement is a legacy of its colonial past. I believe it is time to move on.
