overall I'm quite satisfied with the results of this olympics. no need to be first. America is too good at swimming and track and field. plus they have black people competing for them, thats a whole other talent pool. I'm satisfied with second place. third place would be a disappointment.

I knew what you were suggesting. I wuz just clarifying that no one culture has any monopoly on athletics, in general. Western nations have emphasized athletics since the times of the original Olympiad and this is one Western practice from which many nations could benefit.
I think that swimming and running, up to 800 m, should be required components of all nations’ college-preparatory education.
You will also see a corresponding rise in joint replacements which a lot of people cant afford.

A controversial Olympic Games, a noisy field of public opinion. A Tibetan media person witnessed and participated in this event, staring emotionally and deeply at the crowd. For her, what is the real Olympic spirit? What are the reasons for sticking to the original aspiration these years?

~60% of US medals came from women, whereas 53% of Chinese medals came from women. US is more dependent on women than China.

Also, 26% of US medals came from swimming (many individuals won more than one), and 22% from track and field (almost all blacks).

Whereas China's medal came from shooting (12%), diving (12%), and gymnastics (12%). So China is less dependent on a single discipline/sport to get medals compared to US. Which is why attacking swimming is so important.

Caeleb Dressel contributed 5 out of the 11 golds for the US in swimming. One great swimmer can make a big difference. Individually they can win by themselves and enhance the relay teams. Phelps was great in butterfly and freestyle. Sun Yang is great in freestyle. Just need to find a super talented swimmer and the golds will come. I’ve noticed many of the great swimmers are tall and there is probably a big advantage for tall swimmers with less strokes needed or help with the reach to the finish. Phelps, Dressel and Sun are very tall.

Tall and having large feet are required to be a good swimmer. Well, that's what a swimming coach once told me.

China will win the genetic lottery on tall and big feet. We don't need to funnel our tall giants into basketball where there is zero chance at gold medal (sorry, NBA players are unstoppable)....put those tall basketball players to swimming.

Caleb winning 50% of US gold in swimming is just insane...one single person with 5 golds...wow.

Honestly, although I would've loved to see China top the medal table and I hope China continues to improve in the Olympics and continues its investment into sports, the Olympic medal count just doesn't matter that much in the grand scheme of things.

Winning the most gold medals in the Olympics would bring no tangible benefits to China. No nation is going to avoid going to war with China or decide to align itself with China based on whether or not China won the most gold medals (as some members have suggested).

I am not saying winning gold medals is not important, but some members are making beating the US in Olympic medal count seem to be much more important than it actually is. China does not need to beat the US at the Olympics to surpass the US as a superpower, and there are other fields where it is much more important to being number one in.
