Russia being more formidable we might see things tested closer to a real war environment. Maybe why an older platform was used. Interesting to see if more advanced technology testing the waters.
Well, they say it has official US markings. I am still waiting for the photo.

If they produce a real photo, the US will announce oif they have one missing. It could also be one of the other EU users of the particular UAV.

We will just have to wait and see.

IMHO, if the US was going to do it and try and get it done without notice, they would be using a much newer technology bird, that is much more stealthy. If they were just testing the waters, they would use an older bird like this.

However, there is no confirmation as of yet, either by photograph or the US military that this actually happened. I expect if Russian forces have it, photos will follow in fairly short order.

and ... nothing relevant there (I searched that website for the gadget «Автобаза» which allegedly was used to intercept "it"; I hope I just didn't embarrass myself :)

exactly, The Us is one of the World leaders in UAV's and has already been reveled to have Cutting edge Stealthy UAV's and UCAV's. This is like the Wright flyer of Drones... Well may be not that old but still hardly cutting edge and this is a fairly short range drone.
First Reports are almost Always wrong. We will have to wait and see what happens next. I personally am split the logical majority says miss identification. someone else using a hunter or drone of the same configuration perhaps even a Russian Drone. Part of me the (conspiracy theorist) is suspect that this could even be a drone recovered from else where.

If they are Using Hunters they would Be Us army, Thing is the Only 66th I know of is the 66th Armored Regiment. The Iron Knights. They have two Battalions one in Fort Carson the other in germany.
Out side of that is the 66th Base Air group of the USAF but they are ground Airmen at Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts. once upon a time there was the 66th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, but that was back in 1952 and they were deactivated in 1967.
the 66th Electronic Combat Wing was deactivated in 1992. So it's not them.

Well it would not be out of the realm of possibility if the most advanced US drones were deployed elsewhere, like in Afghanistan or the ME or even the Pacific as part of Obama's pivot. US forces and commanders on the ground could have decided to just use what they got at hand and have real time intel now rather than wait days or weeks for stealth drones to be redeployed.

It could also be that the US did not want to risk a repeat of the Iranian debacle and end up loosing a stealth drone only for it to be paraded on TV by the Russians.

There is also the distinct possibility that this drone was sent on a suicide mission knowing full well that the Russians would detected it, possibily hoping the Russians would send fighters into Ukrainian airspace to shoot it down if the drone was just buzzing about outside of the SAM range of the Black Sea fleet.

The west could then use the Russian violation of Ukrainian airspace and the shooting down of their drone as further evidence of Russian aggressiveness and ill intent.

In any case, there are several pretty plausible explanations for why the US would send in a relatively obsolete drone.

Pentagon: Russian Reports Of US Drone Intercepted Over Crimea Are False

U.S. defense officials say reports from Russia that an American MQ-5B drone was intercepted over Crimea and made an emergency landing there are false. Voice of Russia reported on Friday that “an American scout-attack drone was intercepted in the Crimean sky" and made an emergency landing after an electronic attack disrupted its computers.

“There is zero truth” to the reports, said a Department of Defense spokesperson reached by phone in Washington.

According to the Russian source, the drone, an MQ-5B, belonged, judging by its markings, to the 66th US Military Intelligence Brigade, based in Germany.

The drone was at a height of about 4,000 meters or about 13,000 feet, according to Voice of Russia, which said it was in the possession of “self-defense forces.” A call to the brigade’s German headquarters was answered by a serviceman who said the unit had no knowledge of anything of the sort happening.

The MQ-5B Hunter is a variant of the RQ-5, originally an Israeli design. Its maker, Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC), describes it as a "long endurance, medium altitude, multimission, tactical Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) optimized to provide Army division and corps commanders with a dedicated Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform."

According to data from the manufacturer, the MQ-5B is seven meters (23 ft) long, with a maximum takeoff weight of about 900 kilograms (2,000 lbs). It can fly for as many as 21 hours at an altitude up to 5,500 m (18,000 ft) and carriers several sensors and communications devices, but is unarmed.

Every time I begin to see logical patterns in world events, I get surprised by new developments. Even though Gerhard Schroeder is a socialist, it’s still surprising to hear him say this and cut off Angela Merkel negotiating position.

I just woke up and ... "the drone" left the journalists :)

Guys, there are many "reports" like this one in Central European media (including "exact" predictions when the hostilities will start!), and I don't have stomach to check Eastern European servers these days -- conspiracy theories included in the official coverage of events, common ... I try to ignore this stuff as much as I can, but was in a different mood last evening :) http://www.sinodefenceforum.com/mem...s-views-photos-videos-31-6796.html#post273735

But in NO WAY I try to downplay the Ukrainian Crisis or nothing!
