Except that Russian media has been saying in past months that Kiev is ruled by nazis. Are we supposed to forget these blatant lies?

I was taking the subway home one day, and overheard a conversation. The woman was originally from Ukraine, and she was telling her friend about the situation there. She firmly believed that the Kiev government were run by extremists. She talked about how they celebrated Stepan Bandera, and how they banned the Russian language from education.

This happened in Canada, where the media is flooded with pro-Kiev propaganda.

There are documented evidence of Kiev regime thugs violently assaulting political rivals and reporters. The recent election of a hopefully moderate president does not change those facts.

Russian thugs aren't hiding the fact that there are foreign "civilians" fighting in their ranks.

Only now I found some time to read about what's been going on in Donetsk during last three days (I mean more than just looking at the headlines). I found this Russian video showing members of the Vostok Battalion on Sunday:

They looked formidable ... from another video I figured they fought yesterday afternoon close to the Putilov Bridge (I think it's the junction in the upper-right corner on this map:

at the top is the Donetsk Airport, at the bottom -- the Railway Station). Does anybody have some specific account of the fights?

There's one thing I don't understand at all: During last maybe ten days I noticed several Ukrainian reports (which I didn't believe) about people from Northern Caucasus (Chechens? Ossetians? looking ... Oriental) fighting WITH Separatists ... now even gazeta.ru says

there are several wounded Separatist (currently in Donetsk hospitals), Russian citizens, Groznyi, Gudermes citizens in particular ... Why?

There is too much deliberate disinformation and simply biased or unreliable information out there regarding details on fighting and voting in the Ukraine for me to have confidence in any of it. The indisputable facts though are that a Western block-leaning government is in place in Kiev and that forces which report to Kiev have retaken/maintained control of the Donetsk airport. Meanwhile Russia has been withdrawing its troops from the border and have made statements which presume a Ukraine which includes pro-Russian areas. This tells me that the overall situation in Ukraine is stabilizing, there will be no further Russian annexation, and that is a win for the US and its allies.

It's true you just have to read ALL of the news from both side and try to figure out where the middle truth is.

DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) -- Chechnya's regional leader says he hasn't sent any troops to fight alongside pro-Russia insurgents in eastern Ukraine, but he says some Chechens may have gone there on their own.

In a statement posted Wednesday on his Instagram, Ramzan Kadyrov said two-thirds of three million Chechens live outside the province in Russia's North Caucasus mountains, so he "can't and mustn't know where each of them goes."

Fighters who looked like residents of the Caucasus were seen among pro-Russia rebels in eastern Ukraine, where they have seized government buildings and fought with Ukrainian forces. Moscow has denied it was fomenting the unrest.

In the most ferocious battle yet, rebels in Donetsk tried to take control of its airport Monday, but were repelled by Ukrainian forces using combat jets and helicopter gunships.

Two Senior Police Officers Shot in Eastern Ukraine’s Horlivka
Two senior police officers were shot on Tuesday in the eastern Ukrainian city of Horlivka, Ukrainian news reports said, weeks after the men refused to pledge their allegiance to separatist authorities in the region.

Dmitro Krikunov, head of the Kalininsky district's police unit, and Roman Babyuk, head of the criminal investigation unit, died as a result of gunshot wounds, Ukrainian website crime.in.ua reported Tuesday, citing a spokesman for the Donetsk self-proclaimed authorities.

The two men were among 13 law enforcement officials who refused to comply with a 48-hour ultimatum issued by the region's self-proclaimed authorities on May 13 to pledge their loyalty to the Donetsk People's Republic, local news website Gorlovka.ua said.

It is unconfirmed whether the expired ultimatum and the men's death are related.

No one's guaranteeing any side has to provide any of the truth. And even all the some-of-the-truths from all sides may not be enough to be used to figure out the whole truth.

Ukraine army helicopter shot down near Sloviansk

Pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine have shot down a military helicopter near Sloviansk, killing 14 people, the country's outgoing president says.

Olexander Turchynov said the rebels used a Russian-made anti-aircraft system, and an army general was among the dead.

The town of Sloviansk has seen fierce fighting between separatists and government forces in recent weeks.

President-elect Petro Poroshenko has vowed to tackle "bandits" in the east.

Meanwhile, Russia has reiterated calls for Ukraine to stop its military campaign against the pro-Moscow rebels and "start a real national dialogue".

In a statement, the Russian foreign ministry also urged the United States and European Union "to use all their influence on Kiev to stop Ukraine's slide into national catastrophe".

'Terrorists'
The BBC's Mark Lowen in the region says Thursday's incident was a major blow to the Ukrainian army as it pursues its offensive against the separatists.

The helicopter was hit during heavy fighting between Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, after it had dropped off troops at a military base.

President Turchynov said the 14 dead included Maj Gen Serhiy Kulchytskiy, head of combat and special training for Ukraine's National Guard.

It is one of the worst losses of life for government forces in the conflict so far. Last week at least 14 soldiers died in a rebel attack on an army checkpoint near Donetsk, some 130km (80 miles) from Sloviansk.

Earlier this month the separatists shot down two army helicopters, also near Sloviansk, killing a pilot and another serviceman.

Mr Poroshenko, a confectionery magnate, won 54.7% of the vote in last Sunday's presidential election, according to final results announced on Thursday.

After the poll, he called the separatists "terrorists" intent on maintaining a "bandit state". He vowed to tackle them "in hours", not months.
I left out everything on this page extraneous to this incident.

Note that the dead general is head of combat and special training for Ukraine's National Guard. This suggest that the Kiev forces operating in the area are not army but National Guard forces which are clearly very different.
Also note that the death of the 14 soldiers last week is still blamed on the rebels despite the videos of helicopter attacks.
