The guy ask a random beat cop, who refused to confirm any of the details he was asking. How anyone can read more into that than one beat cop refused to confirm one reporter's questions (not necessarily that he doesn't know what happened or have a very good idea) about rumors regarding an active investigation is beyond me.

There is more than enough spin in the media already without us adding our own.

I've found article which describes why US had overthrown democratically elected president Yanukovych:

Please, that article is about as balanced as a ten ton dump truck sitting on one side of a teeter-totter and a small 3-year old child sitting on the other.

I've seen equally unbalanced articles in the West that indicate that "the US had absolutely nothing to do with this," which are equally skewed.

To say Putin had nothing to do with it is equally ridiculous.

No one is served by spreading such unbalanced reporting on either side.

Fact is, the Ukrainian people in the capital protested en masse against their president to the point that they were willing to die...and keep on protesting to the point that the parliament removed him according to their constitution. Now, there were a lot of players involved in that, on both sides of the issue. But it was not principally some US backed uber-right wingers in the drivers seat, no matter how hard someone wants to spin it to be that with unconfirmed reports, secret recordings, etc., etc.

People can believe whatever they will...and usually people will find reports that tend to back up their side of a story, while at least making some pretense of seeing both sides.

IMHO, this article is so one sided that it borders on the absurd.

Several weeks ago I've heard about Ukrainians threatening to close

the canal is almost 403 km long, up to 150 m wide, 7 m deep, and the maximal flow capacity is 300 cubic meters per second
(that last number seems to me to be pretty high ... I just checked and at this moment the flow of the Moldau river in Prague is: 55.1 -- but it can get 100 times higher, contrary to that canal heheh)

There does appear to be a very tight control of media stories from Ukraine being published/broadcast through the Corporate and Establishment media in Western Nations at present. I notice this as last week, we had a fairly robust game of allegation and rebuttal from both sides, but over the last few days it has gone far more quiet with many stories simply being ignored.

I suspect that one of the reasons is that last week, many of the claims and rebuttals coming from Kiev and Western Capitals were being rapidly proven as bogus, so it seems the answer to that problem has been to stop playing.

This is frustrating as it means that although the Russian media is still producing its stories, it is becoming increasingly difficult to get corroboration or balance from other sources. No doubt this is the intention.

Story purporting to be about a major clash at another Check Point near Slavyansk and also close to an old Army Arms Dump. Impossible to corroborate at present.

Story about the capture of three Alpha Anti Terror operatives in Donetsk. No corroboration again but does seem credible.

Russia takes another leaf out of the US play book and publishes its own pictures of Ukrainian forces near Slavyansk. This story does contain all the ingredients for the base narrative to support the start of a Russian R2P Intervention.

Regarding the captured OSCE mission, I found this which I believe is an official OSCE twitter feed and which says
Team not OSCE monitors but sent by States under Vienna Doc on military transparency

Anybody able to comment on this?

Actually I can update myself. It seems that the non official OSCE status is true as other media are no longer referring to them as such, simply as European Observers

Pro-Russia Separatists Free One of Detained Observers in E. Ukraine
by VOA News
Pro-Russian separatists have freed one of the eight European observers being detained in the eastern Ukraine city of Slaviansk on Sunday evening.

The Swedish observer was escorted to an Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) vehicle and driven away.

A Reuters reporter outside the city administration building in Slaviansk said the man came out, escorted by three unarmed men, got into a white OSCE jeep and drove off.

Earlier on Sunday, a group of European monitors detained by pro-Russia insurgents in eastern Ukraine appeared in public Sunday to give assurances they are not being mistreated, even as negotiations began to secure their release.

With armed rebels watching as they spoke, the leader of the monitors from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, German Colonel Axel Schneider, assured reporters in Slovyansk they were in good health.

The insurgents called the eight military observers "prisoners of war." Schneider said they were being held for political reasons.

"Our presence here in Slovyansk is for sure a political instrument for the decision-makers here in the region, and the possibility to use it for negotiations."

The OSCE sent a team of negotiators to eastern Ukraine to meet with the self-proclaimed mayor of Slovyansk, Vyacheslav Ponomaryov, about freeing the military monitors.

The rebels also displayed three bloodied and blindfolded officers from Ukraine's Security Service it captured. The officers were shown with heads bowed, and stripped of their pants and shoes.

Meanwhile, at a news conference in Malaysia, U.S. President Barack Obama warned economic sanctions against Russia will be stiffened because he said Moscow is encouraging unrest in the largely Russian-speaking eastern Ukraine.

"There is strong evidence that they have been encouraging the kinds of activities that taking place in eastern and southern Ukraine and so, collectively, us and the Europeans have said that so long as Russia continues down the path of provocation rather than try to resolve this issue peacefully and de-escalating, there are going to be consequences. And those consequences will continue to grow."

In a joint statement late Friday, the Group of Seven major economies announced it had agreed to "move swiftly" on new sanctions against Russia because of its interference in Ukraine.

The G-7 nations said they would take measures to intensify "targeted sanctions" against Moscow. A U.S. official said the penalties could take effect as early as Monday.

Obama says the U.S. and Europe must act together in levying sanctions against Russia over its actions in Ukraine that he says threaten that country's independence and sovereignty.

The American leader said a deal had been reached with Russia to de-escalate the crisis, but "Russia has not lifted a finger to help."

On Saturday, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry called for Russian support "without preconditions" for efforts to free the European monitors seized Friday.

A senior State Department official said Kerry delivered his demand in a telephone call to Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov. Moscow later said it is taking what it called "all measures to resolve the situation," but blamed Ukrainian authorities for failing to secure the safety of the team.

The German-led OSCE team was acting under the authority of a four-party agreement directing the OSCE to monitor security and human rights in Ukraine's Russian-speaking east and south. The deal, reached in Geneva, was signed by Russia, Ukraine, the United States and the European Union.

Separately, interim Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk told reporters Saturday that Russian aircraft had violated Ukrainian airspace seven times overnight.

The Russian Defense Ministry said its "objective monitoring of the air situation" had not detected any overflight violations.

Meanwhile, in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, VOA correspondent Brian Padden says he was confronted by an angry mob Saturday as he tried to cover a rally in front of an occupied building. He says protesters accused him of supporting a "fascist" U.S. government.

Armed pro-Russian gunmen have seized government facilities in about 10 cities in eastern and southern Ukraine, and are demanding a referendum on whether to secede from the country and join Russia.

Germany fired off two shots.
Germany deplores 'public parading' of observers held in Ukraine
2:09pm EDT
(Reuters) - Germany denounced as "revolting" on Sunday the parading of European observers held captive by pro-Russian rebels in Ukraine, and said Moscow had a duty to press its separatist allies to free the prisoners.
Pro-Moscow rebels have been holding eight European monitors for three days. On Sunday they freed one, a Swede, but said they had no plans to free the others. The captives were shown to journalists in Slaviansk, a town in Eastern Ukraine that separatists have turned into a heavily fortified redoubt.
"The public parading of the OSCE observers and Ukrainian security forces as prisoners is revolting and blatantly hurts the dignity of the victims," German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said in a statement.
"It is an infringement of every rule of behavior and standards that are made for tense situations like this. Russia has a duty to influence the separatists so that the detained members of the OSCE mission are freed as soon as possible."

Germany advises against travel to east Ukraine, says media at risk
7:46am EDT
BERLIN (Reuters) - Berlin's Foreign Ministry on Sunday strongly advised Germans to avoid travelling to eastern areas of Ukraine due to the tense situation and said journalists risked being held by separatist forces there.
"The situation in eastern Ukraine is very tense at the moment," said the ministry, adding an increasing number of state institutions were occupied by armed individuals.
"In view of the latest developments, it must be assumed that representatives of the media are at special risk of being held or seized by separatist forces," it said in a statement.

Ukraine's PM Accuses Russian Military of Airspace Violations
by VOA News
Ukraine's prime minister says Russian military aircraft have repeatedly crossed into Ukraine's airspace, in what he called Russian aggression designed to undermine global security.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk told reporters Saturday that Russian forces had "violated" Ukrainian airspace seven times overnight.

"We do understand the reason Russian military did it. The only reason is to provoke Ukraine to strike missile and to accuse Ukraine of waging the war to Russia," he said.

On Friday, U.S. military officials also said Russian aircraft had flown into Ukrainian airspace, a charge Russia denies.

In a Saturday statement carried by the Itar Tass news agency, Russia's Defense Ministry said its "objective monitoring of the air situation" had not detected any air border violations.

Prime Minister Yatsenyuk had made the accusation in Rome, after announcing he was cutting short a trip to Italy that included talks with Pope Francis.

The pontiff told Yatsenyuk that he would "do everything possible" to promote peace in Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatists continue to occupy government buildings in about a dozen cities in eastern Ukraine.

According to VOA correspondent Brian Padden, who is on the ground in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, anti-American sentiment appears to be on the rise among pro-Russian separatists.

An angry mob confronted him on Saturday as he tried to cover a rally in front of an occupied building. He says protesters accused him of supporting a "fascist" U.S. government.

"As we were walking away, the crowd just got more angry and started following us and one guy tried to grab my colleague's camera," he said. "I tried to stop him. Then he grabbed me and another guy came with a baton. But before anything could really deteriorate into a real scuffle, the police kind of came between all of us and pulled us out and we just kept walking."

International monitors

In another development, Russia vowed to help free a team of international military observers who are being detained by pro-Russian separatists who suspect the observers are "NATO spies."

On Friday, the separatists seized a bus carrying more than a dozen people from the Vienna-based Organization for the Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), near the town of Slovyansk.

According to a senior State Department official, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Saturday demanded full Russian support "without preconditions" in efforts to free the European monitors.

Kerry delivered his demand during a telephone call to his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, who said Ukraine must stop its military operations in the country's southeastern region as part of efforts to end the crisis.

In a statement, Moscow later said it is taking what it called "all measures to resolve the situation," but blamed Ukrainian authorities for failing to secure the safety of the OSCE team.

In a Saturday statement, a White House official said U.S. President Barack Obama underscored the importance of solidarity in responding to Ukraine's crisis during talks with his European counterparts.

Earlier, the Group of Seven major economies announced it had agreed to "move swiftly" on new sanctions against Russia because of its alleged actions in Ukraine.

In a joint statement, the G-7 nations of Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the U.S. said they would take measures to intensify "targeted sanctions" against Moscow.

A U.S. official said the sanctions could begin as early as Monday.

On Saturday, about 150 U.S. troops arrived in Lithuania. They are part of a U.S. contingent of about 600 troops being deployed to the region.

Russian military aircraft have not breached any state borders, including those of Ukraine, Russia’s Defense Ministry has said. Ukraine’s acting defense minister has also retracted claims by Kiev that Russian jets “violated Ukrainian airspace seven times.”

“Russia’s means of objective airspace situation control did not record any violations of air boundaries of the states adjacent to Russia, including those of Ukraine,” Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement Saturday.

Pentagon officials quoted by US media Friday claimed that “Russian fighter jets flew into Ukrainian airspace a handful of times over the last 24 hours,” calling it “a continued provocation.” The officials were not named.

“The unfounded claims of Pentagon officials on the alleged ‘breaching of airspace of Ukraine by Russian fighter jets’ appears to have been based on rumors and speculation,” a Russian Defense Ministry spokesman told Itar-Tass on Saturday.

“Those media allegations are populist in nature, they contain no information on the time and place of the incident, as well as no data on altitude, speed and the direction of aircraft, as well as no other objective parameters,” the spokesman said.

The US sources must have “dreamed it all up,” or “a little bird told them that,” the spokesman added.

The Defense Ministry spokesman called on Pentagon officials to stop “spreading unverified ‘facts’ through the media,” saying that “it does not at all help de-escalate the situation in Ukraine.”

Instead, the US Defense Department should “use the many years’ experience of cooperation on information interchange” with the Russian side.

The Ukrainian coup-imposed acting defense minister, Mikhail Koval, on Saturday told journalists that no violations of state borders by the Russian aircraft or troops have been recorded.

“Four [Russian] transport airplanes Il-76 were flying along our state border but they did not cross the borderline,” Koval was quoted as saying by Interfax-Ukraine.

The “peak of activity” of the Russian Armed Forces conducting military exercises near the Ukrainian border was recorded on April 24-25, he said. The closest that the Russian troops came to the Ukrainian border was 2-3 kilometers, Koval said.

According to the Ukrainian official, the Russian drills were meant to discourage Kiev from continuing with the so-called “anti-terrorist operation” in three southeastern regions of Ukraine. However, he added, the military operation continues “although its pace is not high.”

Koval’s statements, made during the Saturday briefing, apparently contradicted the allegations earlier made by the Kiev government against Russia.

“Russian military aircraft today at night crossed and violated Ukrainian airspace seven times. The only reason is to provoke Ukraine... and to accuse Ukraine of waging war against Russia,” the coup-imposed Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk claimed during his visit to the Italian capital, Rome. Yatsenyuk, who had previously made similar unfounded allegations of “Russian tanks in Crimea” and “nuclear weapons in Iran,” was speaking to reporters in English.
Now RT I question has they have a Direct hat in the Ring. It sounds like the PM may have Shot his mouth off And then The Acting Defense minister Reigned him back in. The Ukrainain PM is also stated as Claiming Russia Wants too start World war 3.
Latvia says Russia trying to use 'provocateurs' in Baltic state
Fri, Apr 25 2014
RIGA (Reuters) - Latvia's defense minister said on Friday Russia was trying to stir unrest in the Baltic state by using "specially-trained, professional provocateurs" in the wake of its intervention in Ukraine.
The Baltic countries Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, now NATO and EU member states, were once part of the Soviet Union and have substantial Russian-speaking minorities, like Ukraine.
"There are risks that Russia might try to destabilize the situation in the region," Raimonds Vejonis, Latvia's defense minister, told Reuters in an interview.
"We see it very clearly in Ukraine's case, where they have acted and are still trying to escalate the situation in different ways," the minister added.
"They are trying to increase negative sentiment in society through certain specially-trained, professional provocateurs."
As an example, he mentioned comments by Aleksandr Gaponenko, an activist for non-citizens' rights in Latvia, to Norwegian television that Latvia's government intended "to suppress protests with the power of army".
Around 26 percent of Latvia's 2 million people are ethnic Russians. Many do not have Latvian citizenship and so cannot vote or apply for certain public-sector jobs. Moscow has long complained about the rights of ethnic Russians in the Baltics.
"There are no direct military threats to Latvia and the Baltic region, but there is increased activity of Russia's Armed Forces near the border," Vejonis said.
NATO "ESSENTIAL"
He stressed that NATO's presence in Latvia was critical, but the country also needed to develop its own military capabilities.
"Memories of Soviet times are still alive here, nobody wants those times to return. The NATO presence is essential to dispel these concerns," Vejonis said.
NATO is temporarily boosting its presence in eastern Europe to reassure allies that NATO would protect them if they ever faced Russian aggression.
The United States has sent 600 soldiers to the Baltic countries and Poland for infantry exercises. Soldiers are expected to stay in the region until the end of the year.
It will also send more ships and planes to eastern Europe.
Latvia's defense spending, along with several other NATO members including Lithuania, is short of the alliance's target of 0.9 percent of GDP for 2014. It says it will gradually increase funding for the military to 2 percent of GDP by 2020.
"We see now that if there is no defense, then there are no other industries, because there is only chaos, as we can observe in Ukraine," the minister concluded.
