Lieutenant General
When I saw the pictures of alleged Russian "Special Forces" last night, I thought it was a late April Fool!

Have you actually looked at these guys? Most of them are older than I am and have bigger waist lines as well. Special Forces? once again you need to be desperate or an accredited Western Journalist to believe that one.

At best these guys might be Cossack volunteers from Russia, but not regulars of the Federation Armed Forces.
The rest of the story is total Bravo Sierra.

They don't necessarily have to do the fighting but as advisers, teachers, and intelligent and information gatherings.

I kid you not, American and Russian military dolphins might be facing off each other soon in the Black Sea. Make sense to me because of the dolphins intelligence and ability to find and disrupt sea mines and enemy sonars if trained properly. They can be trained for underwater recon for the navy as well in waters that are hard to reach by human divers.

This is curious

There is news today about the murder of local Politician near Sloviansk

The victim is named as Vladimar Rybak and he is described as a local councillor of the Fatherland party in the Donetsk region town of Horlivka.
I did a search to see if any details were on the net, but what I found was a surprise, with lots of results for this name.
It turns out that Vladimar Rybak was the name of the last Chairman of the Supreme Rada under Viktor Yanukovych. This Mr Rybek was a member of the Party of the Regions and also had to flee from Ukraine on the night of the coup 20th February.

Is this the same man or is Vladimar Rybak a very common name in those parts?
It is a very curious coincidence. Mistaken Identity?

well the 2008 Georgian photo is confirmed, the others are anyone's guess. Normally Russian SF hide there mugs. Flash back to the Crimea op and everyone was ski masked. That said there are different definitions for Special operations, and Speznats actual Russian meaning is literally "Soldiers of Special purpose". If these older guys are Russian troops then when one factors in the Georgian bearded man then my best assessment is these are Russian equivalent to green beret's , trainers and advisers not commandos. The Beards are common to SF, particularly Russian and American who would be operating in close proximity to Islamic cultures where Beards are common. The weight is not always fat but concealed body armor.
still its just as likely some Ukrainian biker gang turned pro Russian militia.

This article must have been written by a hard core Cold-Warrior, half-truths spun with a lot of demonizing the other side while putting their own side on a pedestal and justifying no-holds-barred behavior for themselves at the same time. Classic!

Despite its bias it does touch on a point I made before on this forum (landing me an undeserved forum mark of shame I might add) regarding colonialism being alive and well in a different guise.

His name was Volodymyr Rybak and he was abducted on April 17, died on April 19 (alas, was tortured before his death), body found on April 22 ... the Ukrainian version in English (including information about the autopsy):

For the first time I heard about it yesterday in the evening, but I think there were no Russian reports available at that time. Now they are (I just read this one:

and I quote one sentence of out it
"Очевидец рассказал милиции, что четверо мужчин в камуфляжной форме и в масках силой посадили Рыбака в автомобиль и увезли в неизвестном направлении."
which I translate as
"An eyewitness told the Police that four men wearing camouflage fatigues and masks forcefully put Rybak into their car and drove him away to unknown location."

How Obama’s White House Lost Ukraine in a Few Stupid Steps

The Fiscal Times
By Patrick Smith

This article's primary purpose is to blame the Obama administration alone for how the situation in Ukraine has developed, it neglects multiple important facts to pander to its political bias, such as how the Orange Revolution has long been in shambles before the Obama administration had anything to do with it, which illustrates how Russia was never going to accept a West-leaning Ukraine, the already deteriorating relationship with Russia during the preceding Bush administration, how Russia now has less influence in Ukraine, how Ukraine is now more of a mess for Russia as well as anyone else to handle, and how Ukraine is only one piece of the puzzle in the US-Russia relationship, just to name a few. The Obama administration has done a decent job with the situation it faced since neither yielding Ukraine to Russia nor risking World War 3 are viable options.
