for 147 years now, the south has held on to a belief that it's "way of life" would rise again. well, the confederate belt has now been soundly defeated, again! no palin to blame this time. a successful billionaire, former governor, and a bright, handsome, and ambitious young congressman put forth the best that the contemporary republican party had to offer. even with this, they couldn't even win their own home states. those states just so happened to be union states, and, just as in the historic civil war, they have rejected the politics of the exclusion of privilege to a particular class. just as in the historic civil war, working class americans from "the north" have defeated the privileged "south".

When 93% of black population, 71% of Hispanics and 75% of Asians vote for democrats, Republicans just can't win. The biggest issue last night was whether or not the democrats can get the minority vote out and they did.

You don't really need to have a minority as your representative to win that group of votes. George Bush won over 40% of Hispanics. There is no reason why Republicans can't get to there or up to 40-50% range for Asians.

There is no reason Obama should be getting a second term, but the Republicans didn't show enough of a different vision for the country and didn't connect with minority voter. Just saying "Obama is a bad president" is not enough. Fiscal conservatism is a very attractive message, but this cultural war and war mongering stuff isn't. Republicans have to move beyond that.

Being a bit cynical I'd say any president is destined to have a second term unless he steps on too many toes or severly screws up on the job. Obama may or may not have the best policies, but he hasn't screwed up anything that bad. The economic downturn hasn't worsened dramatically, he did ok under the gulf oil spill and sandy, he wound down the wars and killed bin laden. Very very few presidents in modern times have only sat one term. Heck even Bush who barely won the first term sat for another...basically because he didn't screw anything up dramatically in his first term...(as far as we knew back in '04 at least)
