i think the american civil war might finally be over.
for 147 years now, the south has held on to a belief that it's "way of life" would rise again. well, the confederate belt has now been soundly defeated, again! no palin to blame this time. a successful billionaire, former governor, and a bright, handsome, and ambitious young congressman put forth the best that the contemporary republican party had to offer. even with this, they couldn't even win their own home states. those states just so happened to be union states, and, just as in the historic civil war, they have rejected the politics of the exclusion of privilege to a particular class. just as in the historic civil war, working class americans from "the north" have defeated the privileged "south".
if the gop ever wants to be relevant again, they'd better start considering the politics of inclusion, and quick!
i voted for romney, cynically, because i believed in the power of that old ideology. i don't believe in it, but i did believe in the power of it. i was certain that it would celebrate one last great victory in attempting to restore that outdated value system. i guess i underestimated america's progressive evolution and overestimated its regressive inclination.
no, the sour grapes and vitriol won't cease. but, the awareness will set in. karl rove, the war AND the battle are now over. it's time to retire the confederate battle flag once and for all!
