I don't think that should be noted or punctuated, because over the years of observation there has been no indication that any of the 09IIIA subvariants has any VLS, and the fact that it has a minor hump in that location (as well as potentially a minor recess below the external hull) could be attributed to other things like a TAS location.

In short, there is no need for us to muddy the waters by resurrecting the discourse of "is it possible that 09IIIA may also have VLS".

(if that's not what you're implying, then no worries, but I think we should be also actively trying to avoid the idea of "is it possible 09IIIA may also have had VLS")

May be it is the reserved platform for VLS and the modification project started from last year. Who knows?

Another satellite image of that new boat, quite possibly showing a few more empty VLS cells.

For record keeping, that was posted a page or two back earlier this week, albeit as a tweet embed without the image itself attached.

Thanks for pointing that out. I have twitter/X blocked. Maybe It's time to unblock it, but I hate the clutter.

According to @万年炎帝 on Weibo:

1. The US Navy ONI stated that the 885 (Yasen) is quieter/stealthier than the 688I (Improved Los Angeles), but still worse than Seawolf and Virginia in that regard,

2. The 885M (Yasen-M) should be reaching the quietness/stealth level of early-Virginia (Block 1/2), and

3. The 093B should be similar (to the Yasen-M and early-Virginia) in this regard.

Probably not exactly breaking news per se, mainly for the record.

Wouldn't this be significantly in conflict with other sources? I recall patch & some others saying it certainly won't be on par with Seawolf let alone VA in stealth.
We know so little about them, the only real estimate besides seeing the very sparse pictures we can do is in terms of which "era" the boats are from.

The 093 hull is contemporary to LA class rather than Virginia, but 093B builds are contemporary with Virginia. It's also hard to tell how much the hull has changed, especially internally. In the same way, a 052 is a very old ship but a 052D is SOTA.

If the hull hasn't changed that much, it's reasonable to conclude it's worse than Virginia, but if the hull has changed a lot, then it's really a toss up. Both are pump jet equipped subs from countries with similar quieting tech level and precision engineering.

Clearly there is need for this kind of visualization. This one was based on Tom Stefanick's "Strategic AntiSubmarine Warfare and Naval Strategy" I consider this as still the best unclassified source of comparisons of quietness for Submarine. This is broadband which well basically the "whole" noise level produced by a submarine being integrated into one variable.

I'm curious if papers on Chinese submarine can be found which have similar depictions as above ?

It also very clear in terms of numbers (e.g 140-150 dB is considered quiet) While modern diesel electric is at 115-125 dB. With practical limit of submarine quietening is at 75-85 dB for which detection range is same as the length of the hull. Lower could be achieved but there will be no more Military usefullness that can be gained from going lower.
