Did it? First time I heard China got the opportunity in the first place.
That IS strange. It could be that this is intended to reflect the impact of maintenance - some silencing measures require regular and scrupulous maintenance to remain effective (and indeed may do more harm than good in poor condition). I believe those charts are quite old, dating from a period where the Russian submarine force was facing an existential funding shortage.
Just goes to show that even a simplified schematic can be hiding a lot of complexity - with the diagram alone it is difficult to judge whether it can be dismissed.
Yeah agreed. Since this was published in 2009 I am not surprised they put the 039A ('Yuan') being louder than the Kilo 636. I believe the Yuan came in to service in 2006. Since then the 039A has gone through multiple improvements (039A -> 039AG -> 039B -> improved 039B also called 039C). And regarding the "St. Petersburg" class, according to wiki the 1st prototype was launched in 2004 and commisioned in 2010 but all subsequent subs of the class are are "heavily redesigned". So it is possible that the earliest sub ended up being louder than the Kilo 636?
And to all, those diagram were released by the US Navy's Office of Naval Intelligence in
2009! Since then they have not released any info. This is why I say, if the PLAN's 093A has come close to the 688i or 971U then that is HUGE, HUGE leap when looking at the original 093.
