The sub type 093B and frigate Yiyang entered Taisho-jima's contiguous zone at the same time and sailed same route for a while.
I think, in my personal opinion, it cannot be a coincidence, it was a planned act for a certain purpose. Then, the purpose may be likely to avoid detection of submarine. So, Chinese Navy didn't want the sub to be detected. So, it wasn't any kind of demonstration or political signalling.
I would like to hear other people's opinions.

Perhaps or rather the PLAN wants to see the reaction of the JMSDF detection on this situation to better learned and assessed the system.

If the purpose was to avoid detection then they wouldn’t have sailed so close to those islands.

For the question, why the sub 093B sailed so close to the islands?,
perhaps, Chinese Navy wanted to see JMSDF's reaction to know the sub would be detected or not.
If sailing far from the islands, JMSDF may not react to the sub, even the sub was detected. Then, Chinese Navy cannot know the sub was detected or not.
So, perhaps, for that reason, Chinese Navy chose to sail so close to the islands.

It may risk the sub to get torpedoed by JMSDF ... it would be very nasty reaction from PLAN

Being so close to an island structure also compromises the sub’s acoustics, which is why I’m skeptical of this sort of explanation.

For the question, why the sub 093B sailed so close to the islands,

one reason may be, perhaps, PLAN had strong confidence that the sub 093B would not be detected.

A former JMSDF officer Yoji Koda (香田洋二 ) gave his comment to a Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun, " (the fact that the sub was continuously monitored and chased by JMSDF) gave strong shock to Chinese Navy".
