Re: New LHD

The America class will not be an LHD. It has no well deck. It also has a very large hangar. The ship will be more of a pocket CV.

South Korea and Japan aren't classified as LHD. They are a bit different.

Re: New LHD

hmm, please note that there is a difference between having a platform that's capable of handling the take off and landing of F-35B and having a platform that's capable of sustaining carrier operation. When something is designed for carrying helicopters, carrying F-35B is going to pose a lot of problems.

Re: New LHD

The LHD is more of an amphibious / fire support asset than a real "aircraft carrier". It would be essential in any amphibious operation since it can carry helicopters, attack aircraft, and infantry as well.
No attack aircraft, unless you have a STOVL type one. That means a Harrier, later, perhaps, a F-35B. But it should include reconnaissance UAV's.

Depends on the LHD. The USS Wasp Class is officially classified as an LHD, and usually carriers six Harriers. But they also are, from time to time, outfitted as Sea Control vessles, or as full up ground support aircraft carriers and carry a full compliment of Harriers...as this picture shows:

Have USMC's Harriers ever engaged in air battles?

can all those harriers be stored internally or only lashed onto the deck? How many helos can the wasps carry when loaded up with so many harriers?

Cheers

The picture Jeff posted is from Iraqi Freedom in 2003 when the USN deployed two ships as pocket CVs.

I'd say no. A Wasp or Tarawa class hangar is not that large. This is a guess on my part but I think a USN LHD/LHA could house 15 Harriers packed in the Hangar. More than likely the ship when configured as a "pocket CV" would carry only 4 helos. USN SH-60s..

I'm trying to find info on an all Harrier air wing deployments.

More info on Harrier Carriers..

From wiki...

Bonhomme Richard played two significant roles in Operation Iraqi Freedom. First, it offloaded more than 1,000 Marines and gear from the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines into Kuwait. Then after delivering her attack and transport helicopters, troops, and vehicles she took up position just miles off the coast of Kuwait and became one of two Harrier Carriers along with USS Bataan (LHD-5) in the Persian Gulf—launching AV-8B Harrier strike aircraft into Iraq. Pilots from Marine Attack Squadrons 211 and 311, embarked aboard Bonhomme Richard, expended more than 175,000 pounds (79,000 kg) of ordnance, providing close air support to the Marines on the ground and during predetermined strikes in Iraq. During Operation Iraqi Freedom the Bonhomme Richard launched more than 800 sorties, including 547 combat launches.
